Kip LOG: Dragon Age

Ignore if you don't care about my personal interests!

I posted a bit about this on DA too, but I'm going to go a little bit more into detail here.

I play a lot of rpgs, pretty much the only genre I really enjoy. I've played most wrpgs and some jrpgs. Dragon Age Origins has always been in my top 5 and I consider it a worthy successor to Baldurs Gate 2, which it kind of tried to be (with a lot of throwbacks to the series) I started replaying it and it has aged like fine wine! Writing is involving, quests are fun and varied, story makes you want to progress further, all the locations differ radically and the characters are great and memorable.  Some people don't like the combat but I always enjoyed it, fast paced tactical action without turns is always a huge +, and I love the mage spellbook. Just replaying it I find tons of things I didn't on my first playthrough and there are often different ways to solve quests which I had no idea of when I first played. It's an absolute treat to play again and it gives me some valuable relaxation time between all the schoolwork and keeping up with my patreon duties.

About Dragon Age 2:

It was mostly bad, like, really bad. Lazy, pointless, button smashy, repetitive, simplified, stupid. But it had great characters, a pretty unique setting, and some nice aesthetics. They got massive negative feedback and I was hopeful that they would learn from their mistakes.

Dragon age Inquisition:

Single player MMO. Literally. Go kill 50 goblins. Gather 10 plants. Kill 10 mages or kill 10 templars, wow, choice! Go from point a to point b. Ancient evil has arisen. Companions that have nothing to them beside varrick who you already know, and you only tend to remember the fuck annoying ones anyway. Everyone is expendable, nobody is important. Leliana is pointless as shit. Etcetcetc. The game feels like it's crafted with more love than Dragon age2 for example, but it's just all wasted for the "epik open world" shit. They said during development that "they are looking for inspiration from skyrim " which basically screamed failure. Dragon age is anything BUT skyrim. And this empty sandbox pretense is even an insult to Skyrim. All in all the game is not exactly BAD, like it plays okay and doesn't glitch and combat works etc. But it has no soul. It's hollow, it's like eating the same thing every day for a month.

I've never been this disappointed in a game I was looking forward to (besides maybe TOR but I'm only myself to blame for that) and it's baffling how I can go back to an 8 year old game and enjoy it immensely while I never want to touch this abomination again.

If you like RPG's go play Dragon Age Origins and pretend the rest never happened. Ohh, and Awakening is great too.

I had all my wisdom teeth removed the day started playing DA Inquisition. With the painkillers I was prescribed, the character creation process was...disturbing and wonky?

Pandersaurus

So much truth.

ColossalDream

lol too true!

Yeah I'm so used to being treated like a second class citizen just because I'm not in the majority. Just appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Kipteitei

They did that to Mass Effect, They changed it from an RPG with shooter mechanics to A shooter that you sometimes level up in. They catered to shooter fans instead of the games original fan base :(

Talltapper

It would have been okay if they weren't trying to "go for the skyrim audience" The good parts of the game are mediocre-good but it's like 10 hours of content compared to 90 hours of fetch quests.

Kipteitei

The first one was brilliant, even if it was a bit of a throwback to the old isometric RPGs of the 90's. The second game seemed like it had been made primarily for console gamers, while alienating all the pc players who made the 1st one such a success. I think with the third one, they've tried to strike a better balance between pc and console gamers, but still haven't quite got it right.

Davo

To me almost all RPGs are just single player MMOs. Just grind away for bigger numbers.

Streamtiem

No you're not alone, I've heard a couple people say they preferred 2 over origins, but it's usually because 2 has more party banter and generally more encounters and activities&quests with all of your party members. Also the characters in 2 are more... "modern" which annoyed the hell out of me in a fantasy setting but it can be appealing to others. That's about the only positive thing about it tho.

Kipteitei

I dunno what's wrong with me, but I'm the only person I know who liked 2 better than origins. Inquisition is definitely the worst of the three, though I don't have such strong feelings about it.

I wish I had more time for random gaming, pretty much been playing Overwatch lately and nothing else. Will have to add this to my Steam wishlist and snag it sometime though. And then MAKE TIME

Jared Hammaker

You can get it for like 5$ on steam usually. A bargain for such a grand 60hour+ adventure.

Honestly I don't think I've ever played Dragon Age. I hear really positive things about them games themselves but I've yet to pick up a copy and try it. I need to some time.
