Help making a new site
Added 2019-06-26 11:39:29 +0000 UTCI'm trying to make a new site where it's easy to read my comic. Patreon is horrendous for that and Deviantart isn't much better.
I tried Newgrounds but their platform is too restrictive for comics. Line WEBTOON doesn't allow nudity, and most other webcomic platforms refuse to have anything to do with anything even resembling mature themes, so I was thinking of putting up my own site.
Does anyone here know what would be the best way to do this? I'd probably get my own domain but I don't know if it would be better to use a site builder like wix or wordPress or just make everything from scratch. Also I got no clue how to use ads to pay for bandwith and however that works so if anyone knows about these things I'd really appreciate any tips!

I dont mean to quit patreon, just to have a convenient site for reading and hosting the comic in addition to patreon and DA

I think all the real money is in subscriptions, pay-what-you-want like patreon. But implementing it yourself would let you take a bigger share of the payment. Also, there will be an instant drop-off of subscribers because of the transition.

Wordpress is very common but it's also a big target for hacks and stuff, and you will need to be on top of maintaining the packages you have installed and updating the software.

2019-06-26 18:42:34 +0000 UTCI would advise to start with WordPress, and switching to a custom solution later only if it doesn't meet some of your requirements. Building a tailor-made website upfront seems too ambitious if you're not so sure yet about what you want to create.

2019-06-26 18:11:22 +0000 UTCI work in software as a manager, you'll want to at least avoid Wix and any platform that does not allow you to export the HTML and CSS. That way you're not stuck on their platform and lose everything if you leave. I've seen a lot of success with WordPress, and since it's community is open, you'll find a ton of getting started and reusable examples on the internet for getting something like this going.

2019-06-26 18:04:47 +0000 UTCMaking your site from scratch would be extremely difficult and you'd probably have to find someone to help you. You should probably use wix or some other site builder. Also Google adsense doesn't allow "adult content" so you probably won't be able to use it.

2019-06-26 16:12:44 +0000 UTCI would suggest speaking with a professional webdeveloper- or if there's anyone you know as a friend who has skill and experience in webdeveloping. There's quite a lot that has to be done, especially if you're placing a large volume of your own intellectual property, or intend to process transactions in any kind of way. I would offer my own assistance but I am not really that skilled as far as raw HTML and such goes. I can work with pre-made formats and PHP, but aside from the technical backend, my skill at making websites look good is fairly lacking. But if you want tips/pointers on how to get certain things done, I'd be more than willing to bounce ideas. Other than that though, I cannot stress enough how important it is to have someone who you are either paying on contract, or trust incredibly well, to guide you through or assist you in developing your website. I mostly suggest a professional on contract because I love your art, and I know you love it too- wouldn't want anything bad to happen along the line, and a great site is really what you need.

2019-06-26 14:27:42 +0000 UTCI've tried Weebly and Wix, both are super easy to use, but you can probably do more with the Wix editor. I think you can also edit the code and not just use the builder!

2019-06-26 13:13:57 +0000 UTCI have to consider the possibility that there will be lots of traffic, so I'm prepared to pay for hosting fees.

2019-06-26 12:03:55 +0000 UTChmm , i don't know the easiest way, but if you're aiming to go web developer then there are many options for web hosting, you can upload the page to heroku for example, and it's free if you don't have too much traffic, you'll also need storage, probably, something like AWS, and since you are publishing mostly images you can take advantage on CDNs such as cloudfront or cloudflare ..

2019-06-26 11:50:17 +0000 UTCI can do a little bit of html and it's not really difficult, it's the hosting and other technicalities that seem a bit like a burden.

2019-06-26 11:49:49 +0000 UTChave you tried using square space, i heard its easy too use and some of the best templates too get started quick Or you try to learn HTML/CSS which takes a while but is fun too learn.

2019-06-26 11:46:26 +0000 UTCHtml/CSS is incredibly easy to learn and allows for a lot of freedom. For file hosting you could probably use a free program like Pngyu to compress stuff on your server then use MEGA or something to host the hi res art to minimize costs for file storage. If you have any questions or need help i'm willing to help teach!
