I'm familiar with prom, but homecoming had me a bit confused. I guess that Spider-Man movie title makes more (less) sense now.

In the states homecoming and prom are two separate things.
Homecoming is more of a collection of activities, including a dance, organized around a sporting event, usually a football (American) game, with an emphasis on welcoming back alumni who have returned to town for the event. Also, it is usually a fall activity to coincide with the American football season.
Prom is the big end-of-year/end-of-high-school formal dance traditionally for juniors and seniors (last 2 years of high school), sometimes with separate proms for each group. While there can be events that follow it (parties, school-sponsored activities to discourage underaged drinking, etc) the prom tends to be a standalone event rather than part of a greater celebration like the homecoming dance.
