the old design was clearly based on the US Marines which makes a lot of sense because the unsc is portrayed in the games and lore as basically the us marines in space. im sure they went with UNSC when creating the lore originally because it sounds just like USMC and they worked backwards from there and almost 20 years later the lore has overtaken that original point
