I personally don’t like the “Play-in Tournament, due to how the NBA tried to sabotage the Memphis Grizzlies in favor of giving a softball toss to the New Orleans Pelicans. The NBA tried to help the Pelicans make the playoffs and play the Lakers in the 1st round during the 2019-2020 season in the Bubble. I personally agree with Stephen A. Simp’s point because in the past you’ve had multiple teams make the playoffs in one Conference below .500. Charlotte is a beautiful city, but they can’t get Free Agents even if Jordan didn’t own the team. How many players run to cities like Charlotte, Memphis, New Orleans, San Antonio (which has a population of over 1 million people), Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Sacramento, Oklahoma City, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Portland, and Salt Lake City. Cities that are “Small Markets” in the NBA are major markets in the NFL or MLB. So a league that is very popular, and can generate more money because it’s product isn’t exclusive to satellite like the NFL is, has more small markets that are major cities than the other sports leagues. One way that the Play-in Tournament could work is that the NBA fixes it’s parity and small market issue, and then play a 62 game season. I understand that the league will lose money in games lost, but they acknowledge that a loud minority of fans think the season is the equivalent to an MLB season… well that’s something the NBA is going to figure out. Add to the fact that the NBA this year used poor foresight in getting it’s players ready for the Olympics this year, the NBA Finals ran into the Olympics, and USA almost paid for it. Plus more people tune in when there’s a lower seed that makes it far, as it adds drama and excitement to the playoffs. New York and Houston showed that you don’t have to be a top 3 seed to make the Finals, and Denver showed us what a team can do in “short series” if you get hot at the right time.
