I'm actually grateful this topic is being discussed because I have been struggling with this issue as of late. An older "white" woman used the word in a professional setting I was apart of and pretended as if she did not know or understand why anyone would be offended by her use of the word. I get Chronicle's stance about the historical significance of the word, but I can only speak to my current historical understanding of the word and it pisses me off when anyone uses it, especially "white" people in professional settings.
