The Process w/ Dasha Belokrylova - Drawing a Portrait with Wood Burning

An installment in The Process related content featured on The FAA Collective

Dear Patrons,

As always, thank you for your support and a very warm welcome to our new subscribers! Every person who joins The FAA Collective is an integral member of The FAA Collective Community and we are so excited to be able to still share content with you throughout this difficult period for many.

This week we would like to present you with a video featuring The Florence Academy of Art instructor Dasha Belokrylova showing a method of drawing by burning wood! In this video we observe Dasha drawing a portrait with her wood burning technique and are explained different elements of the process from set up, materials, compositional choices, and how she uses different marks for different elements. We hope you enjoy this glimpse into a technique that although not “traditional” can be used to create a timeless artwork.

Dasha Belokrylova is a Russian painter with an English education and upbringing. At the age of 16 she decided that art was her main interest in life. Following this decision, Dasha finished a two year A-level program in London at a fine arts college. After spending one year in a contemporary arts university in Wimbledon, she realised that her desire was to learn the traditional ways of painting.

In 2015 Dasha began the Drawing & Painting Program in The Florence Academy of Art. During these years in Florence, Dasha learned the method of sight-size, the anatomy of the human body, and oil painting process in full depth. After graduating the three-year program in 2018, Dasha was offered a unique opportunity to stay as an artist in residence that also provided her with teaching experience. She is now a Principal Instructor in the Intensive Drawing Program.

Dasha’s mind is fascinated by mythology and fairytales. She often finds herself challenging the normal depiction of the human body by morphing it with mythical creatures. Studying the nude every day gave her confidence to draw believable figures from her imagination. When painting portraits, she loves to give the sitter an individual meaningful, a story, and create for them a whole different world inside of the canvas.

Although The Florence Academy of Art studios are closed for Italy’s lockdown, the faculty and students are still busy as ever, working from home. In an exciting initiative by The Florence Academy of Art, we invite all of our Patrons to enter and share the “View From Your Room” Competition.

Winners will be featured on the academy’s social media platforms and one will win the prize to a workshop! The hope is to draw in entries from artists around the world who are continuing to work through school closures, lockdowns, social distancing, self-isolations, and overall, create a more positive experience for the FAA Community at large! More information on how and when to enter is available on the FAA instagram here: @florenceacademyofart

Comments

Answer from Dasha Belokrylova: Hi Sonica, The material used is plywood, it’s very soft and easy to burn on, has a good light tone and is very accessible. Thank you fro your kind words, it’s always nice to hear people are interested in the process!

Beautiful work. Thank you for sharing. Can I ask what type of wood is used to do this wood burning technique?

Sonica Odendaal
