Techniques w/ Marco Franco - Color Study

An installment in the Technique related content featured on The FAA Collective Patreon

Dear Patrons,

Thank you for your support!

This week we are excited to present you with a video featuring Marco Franco, a graduate and Principal Instructor at The Florence Academy of Art. In this video, we follow Franco’s beginning study for a rather large seated portrait oil painting. Although the composition of the painting is simple, the set up is more complex, utilizing a mirror in front of the model and next to the canvas in order to observe the subject of the painting through the mirror. In his studio located in the historic Piazzale Donatello studio spaces in Florence, we dive in depth into the purpose and uses of a smaller color study before embarking on a painting like this one.

A color study is a preparatory study that focuses on understanding the value and temperature relationships within the composition of a painting. Marco explains how the study allows for creating parameters of value, temperature, and decisions on the color palette from the very beginning of the project, going through many of the technical and conceptual aspects that are unravelled during this type of study.

Marco Franco is an artist based in Florence, Italy. He is a graduate of The Florence Academy of Art and Principal Instructor in the Intensive Drawing program at the academy. In 2015 Franco received a degree in Restoration from the Accademia di Brera in Milan.
