A note on Villeneuve: In the Tenet episode, Michael, you discussed your worry with auteur directors leaning too much on their unique styles (Time for Nolan, Violence for Tarantino, Whimsical for Wes Anderson). What I respect about Villeneuve is that he seems to do it to SERVE the story and there is a degree of self control / indulgence. Perhaps, one could argue his style is 'dark, long, wide beautiful Sci Fi shots' and there is definitely a danger of overdoing it.

Really appreciated the 'quieter' aspects of character development: A) We get a sense of Paul's character 'through action'. He seems genuinely interested in the geopolitics of Irrakis, educates himself consistently about the Fremen / cultures, and is developing his moral compass. He's not the explicit Chosen One type but rather a reluctant hero. An intriguing leadership arc. B) Also love the exploration of mother-son relationship. We don't see this often in Hollywood narratives. They don't say much to each other, but clearly love each other and problem-solve together (it's believable). Rebecca Ferguson and Timothee Chalamet have great chemistry.

Just saw it, I'd guarded my expectations but damn I thought it was an unbelievable IMAX experience, both the epic and intimate moments. The story was super streamlined and I don't think we got in a lot of character work, but as long as we're getting more I don't mind and I appreciate that it was made pretty accessible to a general audience. Idk how Villeneuve had the restraint to hold back some of the key plot points and underutilize some of the incredibly talented actors, I feel like that's so rare in films these days but I really appreciate it (as long as there IS a part 2). Can't wait to hear your guys thoughts, and go back and see it again!

Yay now I can tune in after my Rocky Horror screening.

I was blown away by the aural experience, more than the visual one.

Saw it late last night in IMAX. I’ve read the book and am a Denis fan — I was impressed, but need to watch again and sit with it before I get a sense of how I feel about it relative to his other movies and major scifi milestones like Alien. Minor not-really spoilers: It reminded me a bit structurally of Fellowship of the Ring. It begins with our protagonist leaving home, and ends with him joining a new group as he embarks on his true journey. Both endings feel like the end of a first act. Both movies take their sweet time immersing us in the textures of their universe. The immersion feels key to the storytelling.
