So I'm a few days late but I wanted to answer what you asked at the end; as Matt said, there have been a lot of improvements in the safety of the cars and the tracks but there is still some danger, there has been one fatality in the last 29 years. There are some more scenes in this that are plucked straight from reality, such as the one where the fan asks for a date on the autograph so that it's worth more if he dies and also the interview where Hunt says his advantage is Big Balls, you can find a longer version of the real interview if you search "James Hunt Big Balls Interview" on youtube.
