Exclusive: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

You voted for it, we talked about it! And we had a ton of fun doing so.

In this episode there is plenty of gushing over how much fun the film is, but we also discuss what exactly are the requires of the adventure genre—a type of movie we've seen less and less of over the years.

We hope you enjoy this episode, and thank you for supporting Beyond the Screenplay!

Stephan Krosecz did a fantastic essay on why this film is so good; it's particularly good at telling you things by showing them. We learn inherent truths about these characters solely based off their actions. I hope it's okay to share the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhdBNVY55oM

Great and fun discussion as always! It’s a real pity that adventure movies have fallen out of style since they can be so much fun. When you talked about the musical score, I immediately thought of all the times I played it while driving and immediately felt like I was in an epic adventure even though I was only going to the grocery store. Usually only video-game music (especially Legend of Zelda) does that to me. As far as suggestions… I’m going to sound like a broken record, and once again recommend Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s a series, I know, but it’s finally (FINALLY) on American Netflix and the show is gaining tons of new viewers and renewed interest, so it would be an interesting analysis. I’d love to hear thoughts on Zuko’s story arc, on Azula as an antagonist, the worldbuilding, the way the show mixes fighting, philosophy, and character development… And I guess thoughts on character in general (as my favorites, Katara, Toph, and Iroh come to mind). If that’s too much of an ask, other suggestions would be: The Others (I think you guys mentioned it back in The Shinning episode?), The Harry Potter Movies/Books comparison that Michael mentioned a few episodes ago that now I really want to listen, Chicago, and Interview with a Vampire.

@Michael if you don't understand why Pirates work you should totally read(or see) the manga "One Piece". For me is the best story I ever read and it is about pirates! The world the writer (Oda) created is something that any storyteller would die to have, such a complex and well constructed story.
