Wouldn't have made the connection myself but because Micheal said it, I'm 100% going to have Umbrella stuck in my head the rest of the day.

Since you guys mentioned Garden State so much, I might as well share this unnecessary bit of information. As a kid watching the trailer for that movie, I honestly thought it was all about a mentally handicapped man and his caretaker who fall in love. I'm not sure why. Something about that trailer just confused my little 11 year old brain. I still like it now, but probably more as a time capsule than an actual film

Toni Collette not having an arch in the film could also be seen as a variation on the theme of the movie. She isn't striving to be a winner, or terribly concerned with whether she's a loser or not. From what Dwayne yells at them during his breakdown, he mentions Divorce when gesturing to his mom. I don't remember if its explicitly stated in the movie at any other point, but it took a couple times to sink in that I don't think Greg Kinnear is Dwayne's father. It seems like Toni's character has already been through the ringer before the film begins and settled into her life for better or worse, taking whatever comes along at face value. She serves a good role in the film too because she grounds the rest of the characters who are in crisis mode for most of the movie. I think it might be a little too chaotic if she was also at that same level of mania. A bit sad to waste a good Toni Collette, but ultimately to the benefit of the story. P.S. I'll be the one guy to say that in my opinion, Napoleon Dynamite is a spectacular film 😄
