Drop-Out, page 91

original dialog to the end of this scene (note: lola was originally smoking in this scene)--
-- i could stay alive for that. so i guess that’s why i stopped… haha.
lola: [takes a long drag]
lola: i always thought it was kinda funny that all i wanted as painkillers. ahahaha... a cruel joke. life. that's what life is.
sugar: it makes sense to me.
lola, confused: ...
lola: ...do you think it ever really counted as being sober if i still smoked weed?
sugar: i mean… i think so. it’s not like you can get addicted to weed.
lola: sugar, are you serious right now.
sugar: yeah! that’s why they legalized it, i thought??
lola: that’s not the biggest,... people get addicted to weed all the time, sugar.
sugar: what??? no!!
lola: yeah! yeah. people can get addicted to literally anything. doesn’t even gotta be drugs.
sugar: you’re messing with my head now-

Comments

There are a lot of little bits of dialogue that are painful here, but the "it's not fair to get closer to someone when you plan on dying" is a particularly big ouch.

i like how sugar talks about the wound still being an issue even if it isn't visible, how it can be worse than an open wound "but i guess you’d have to open it up again" to sanitize the cut. like with emotional things, not talking about them doesn't make the problem go away/it might still get worse, but opening it up again would still be rlly painful. and sugar's expressions in 15-17 versus lola's expression (and being almost completely turned away in the next panel) are an interesting contrast
