this comic turned into something very long and challenging (i've been working on it on and off for about 10 days now). by the end i was very frustrated - my version of paint tool sai had recently started to give me an error that says i don't have enough memory to open it, when i clearly do.
i downloaded the 32-bit version, which opens, but my license for the program is for the 64-bit version, so it opens as the "demo" version, which doesn't allow me to save files larger than 10,000 pixels (i'll admit this is pretty generous, though).
so i had to move around a lot of panels and snip them to squeeze enough pixel space to fit the last closing bit of the comic.

still, overall, a visual i've wanted to do for a while. i wanted to include a rainbow mushroom cloud, etc. for this, but i figured this was "good enough," as it had already broken several rules i have for sketch comics  (no coloring, only one panel per row, etc.) to keep them from becoming another thing that eats up a lot of my time but was originally intended to be quick and easy.
it was a visual i've really wanted to try to portray for a while now, and i knew the likelihood that i'd get to show the "euphoria explosion" in a more serious comic format was around zero, so.
also a rare copy-pasta from me... i didn't want to draw that tiny stopwatch over and over, but i did want to experiment with including it to show a rough amount of time that the dissociative process takes under stress. this was something i hadn't included in the first sketch comic izzi appeared in, so it was more ambiguous how long, exactly, she'd spent making faces in real life (which i thought added to the comedic effect).

also, reminder: if you were in the $25 tier, please remember to drop your pledge down to 15, unless you wish to keep it above the amount that you need to. the tier has been deleted.

yes! that character is using ASL. i've had a handful of people ask me if i have any characters who know sign, but i don't know it myself, and more importantly, i've not been sure how i'd show the hand movements gracefully. for a character speaking with their mouth, i usually pick a "key frame" i imagine their mouth would make on one word that could fit with the whole sentence and their mood, but i felt like picking one keyframe of a hand movement wouldn't have the same effect. here i tried to pick several keyframes of different words in the sentence that looked like they'd blend well together visually w/their motion paths. the words i used for her hand motions in this case were a mix of "10," "delete," and "minute"; they're a little intentionally awkward because she's holding a ladder, but i'm not thrilled with the result. if i end up making a character who signs, i will probably pre-emptively beta run several styles of presentation with a first-language translator first, as i do for any translations i can't confidently do myself. as a side note: in this case, the character was using sign so that she wasn't recorded saying what she wanted to say, as day care facilities have surveillance footage. here, she was essentially telling izzi "i'm leaving now, i'm going to go cover your ass by deleting the last 10 minutes of surveillance, i'll be back in 10 minutes and whatever the fuck this is better not exist anymore." for a character who is plainly using sign in conversation, i would probably nix the single quotes and have it read like most dialogue, with the speech bubble tail just pointing at their hands instead of their mouth.

im sososo happy im so glad we got to see how izzi works at work ALSO!!!!!!!! is that character at the end using sign????? and i love.....so much...... how your comics often have important layers of meaning that encourage active reading, but are also visually clear to interpret?? like theres no guesswork on whats going on which really shows your skill with scene setting, especially with little to no colour !!!!!!!
