familial stranger, page 17

first page - previous page - next page

this scene will last ~1-2 more pages, and then there will be a closing scene, with lola and sugar again, which i'm guessing will be ~2-3. so this one will finally cap out at about 22 pages; i'm more than eager to move on to a new comic, as much as i like these characters.

there are quite a few common body language motions that people use which are very hard to capture in comics due to their still frame presentation. panel 8 reminded me of that -- i tried to portray the laugh-sigh and head shake that people do to say "i can't believe this."

in panel 9, i contemplated switching out lola reiterating her first question with jason saying hesitantly that he thought elizabeth would treat her better than she did him, as lola was her child, and a better person than he was.
for this decision, i asked my wife which option i should go with, and she picked silence, because she felt the other option would warrant "you're an idiot" more than "you're a coward."

as a side note, the plant on the bookshelf (in the last panel up close here) is called echeveria 'lola' -- it has no common name, but it is a succulent plant, part of a group of plant sometimes referred to as "hen and chicks."
pretty plant recommendation of the day: google "painted echeveria."

Lovin the expressions on this page (as usual). Also really enjoying how, as the conversation has gotten more intense, there are fewer detail / scene shots -- the last shot of the succulent does a good job of letting the reader breathe and process the Whole Big Thing that just went down. On a more personal note.. the lines in the last panel made me so anxious haha. Really interested / worried to see how he reacts to that. Also really like seeing exactly how Liz has altered their relationship -- and it's interesting that Lola didn't back down after that reason/excuse was given.
