plain or simple, page 6

i was considering cutting this entire sequence of dialog hard, because i felt that it slowed the pacing a LOT considering that the "plot" of this comic is painting a portrait and talking about stylization.
ultimately, i decided to keep it, after asking for a second opinion. i don't give the character development portions of my stories enough credit in terms of how much it interests people to read, for some reason. they are my favorite parts of literature, personally.

i imagine it's a fairly standard portrait. the melodrama in and of itself was due to the... dubious relationship outis's mother had with them. her reaction was less to the painting and more to a tangible emblem that her child was pursuing an independent career that didn't inherently involve her. to paint her (without asking for direction or her desires) a very formally trained style portrait was less of a thoughtful gift and more a statement that she was not uniquely irreplaceable anymore in her eyes-- outis could paint anyone a portrait and it didn't mean something to them. the way she externalized these feelings was a sort of "this is what you think of me?" one, because her most readily available mode of thinking was "how does this look to other people," so what was communicated to outis was that they had made an error in not considering she is the type of person who would want to be portrayed as loving and warm, given their relationship. THAT SAID... VERY TEMPTING TO TRY PAINTING IT...

They're my favorite too, honestly, so I'm really glad you did leave it in.
