fresh meat, page 48

i designed 2 new characters for this page:

this character, who has been planned for a while, and has appeared in the background several times, such as on pages 17 and 18:

they're a mix between a big-eyed shark and a carpet shark, the kind of small bottom-feeder looking sharks in personal aquariums. this character was to help the homeroom cast feel a little less contrived by having one person who isn't part of the lunch group.

the second guy is a lynx, also a nod to a different species considered for kim. i just needed another staff member to be doing check-in. his personality is transferred from some cut scenes in the overflow ward section where he told kim her access to phone calls was temporarily banned for bad behavior.
his colors were picked primarily to recycle some of the more finicky colors in the designs of the rest of the cast (eg. sugar's middle-brown and blue eye colors, the shark's slightly lighter grey color, etc.)

there were also several continuity errors that made it all the way to the lining and base colors phase before i caught them for the serval... i kept thinking she shouldn't be having as much clothing on her body as technically she should as a staff member.

i was a little enthusiastic about the original foot shot to demonstrate that i tend to draw digitigrade furries' pawpads thicker because they're actually padding the pressure from toe-walking, whereas kim's is more flat, since she's plantigrade. oh well.

anyway... the colors were tricky here, but overall i'm happy with them. that's all.

You always put so much detail and attention into your comic (references for background characters + design them based on other characters colors, the pawpad thing???) and it's always so inspiring to me. Also I love the Shocked (outraged?) Carmilla Window Faces

fuck posted before i was done. anyway this page is gorgeous, the expressions are hilarious and telling, the colors pop like wild, this whole set up both builds more tension and provides some comic relief and i love it. and yeah the shark in particular is adorable. the absolute most non threatening shark i’ve ever seen and i feel like that was deliberate. come to think of it i think it’s interesting that none of the carnivores are really... threatening looking, even whitaker even if she wants to be. i like that. great job as always!
