it'd be very weird to me for sugar to just not communicate with lola all day, or vice versa, so this is her lunch period. it means that there's essentially dialogue in this "silent" comic, even though the texts themselves don't make noise. feels a bit like cheating, but, meh.
this is also probably the most expressive sugar will be in the comic, as she has the benefit of interacting with her favorite person without really necessarily needing to moderate her outward appearance to lola, or anyone else.
the other challenge of this scene is we are literally just watching one character in a room, sitting down, texting someone else. this isn't super exciting to watch, as weird as that sounds, so the framing is a bit odd. i think if i drew a wall of texts to show the conversation over like one or two panels, i'd have to die to restore my honor. this gives a little more insight into sugar's inner life outside of just, the depression, and why she gets up in the morning, per se.
it makes sense that a lot of her life is flat, but a lot of the time there are brief flashes of other, more positive (or negative) emotions that the brain simply brushes aside once they're over, or feels they're vastly outweighed by the burden of flatness.
anyway. i gotta get up early tomorrow to take my dog to the vet. again.
