do you still think about it, page 31 [sketch]

for conversations like this, i have to resist the urge to add ellipses at the front of a lot of the dialogue, lmao. even with long pauses in the actual panel content, a bubble with an ellipsis has different implications from one that doesn't, even though on a technical level it's only supposed to indicate a pause.
i was really beside myself about whether sugar's "sometimes" here should have that ellipsis -- it usually indicates lying or hidden motivations to a reader in comics. i went with no ellipsis because it's more interesting. if there are explanations for two options in a piece of writing, i usually try to opt for more interesting (subversions in most cases).

on the death screen of rain world, you can earn different karma achievements which allow you to warp to various dens. i didn't want to just rip it wholesale, so i went with stars in the constellation. this particular constellation is chamaeleon.

having sugar rapidly switch in between quitting and continuing the game on the death screen was also really challenging. due to panel count limit, i went with something weirder that doesn't perfectly render it. i don't think other ways i can think of to render it would be perfect either, though. one interesting option would have been to take advantage of the fact that 2 stacked panels next to 1 larger panel in the same row is only legible if the 2 smaller panels are on the right -- a reader doesn't know what order to read the panels in if they're on the left. having them go back and forth between 2 panels of continue being highlighted and quit being highlighted would have been neat.

another interesting bit from the script that reminded me of why i need to actually look at it while drawing it instead of just going by how i remember it is sugar vascillating between "quit" and "continue." i thought, obviously she would choose quit. that's what the comic is about. the script itself said, "she continues moving the joystick, switching between continuing or ending the game, but doesn't seem like she's actually interested in making a decision."
maybe the only elucidating part of assuming what would happen next incorrectly is that i had a hunch most readers would also read the expression on sugar's face in that sequence in a way that led them to the same conclusion as me -- that she was going to choose quit, even if it wasn't shown. i tried to adjust accordingly and had her look away from the console while she jostled it to try to add to her indifference toward the decision.

that's all i've got for this page. glad to be pushing through it.
