idletry: september update #4

no new scene yet... it's been a slow few weeks. i tried to switch to coloring some scenes where i didn't have to fix up much, the earliest of which is scene 3... but scene 3 is indoors. and i can't, or don't want to, color indoors like i do outdoors. i wanted the palettes to be softer and more muted.

attempts to use pastels looked hazy and unpleasant to me, though. you may think that these panels look fine... but i do not want other scenes which take place indoors, like sex scenes, limited to these weird washed out pastels. they are also just sort of depressing to look at.

in the end, i think i've figured out a way to make the colors look okay by largely using saturated colors for the foreground, and very pale complementary colors in the back. included the greyscale versions to show the difference in contrast. in my first color test with idletry, the backgrounds were also often complementary... in the second test, with shiloh and avery, the background colors were almost always analogous. i don't really feel like the backgrounds shined in the second test, except in the external shots of the car...

anyway, i spent today working on figuring this out. i haven't really had to intentionally develop a story's style before? i just drew drop-out and fresh meat in my "regular" style. the comic with drake had an art style developed for it, i suppose, but it did not take nearly as much care or detail (probably because its script wasn't finished, as much as i'd like to finish it one day).
that's really all i had to say. also included page 2's finished digital and its WIP print version. i work on the print PSDs on the ipad in my spare time, but i'm a lot slower at it than i'd like. i want to say there's a learning curve... you can compare the difference in line quality, etc. either way. i know i posted page 11's comparison, too (i think), but page 2 definitely has more of a scope of what i want the comic to look like... page 11 had a lot of mood lighting.
