idletry update: july 2025

just barely missed june!!! this scene was very big. it combined 3 scenes, and, despite its size, it still managed to cut down on quite a bit of content simply by removing the intro/outro portions of the extraneous scenes if nothing else.

this is also the scene i thumbnailed a while ago. i have included comparison images with the thumbs and sketches side by side. initially i was going to just post the thumbs and the sketches, but i think providing the side-by-sides after the whole scene itself makes for an easier reading experience.
there are definitely some nasty panels like in every scene, but it's honestly really relieving knowing that it doesn't all have to be published immediately and i have time to smooth over issues and improve those things when i'm in a better headspace (or handspace) to draw them. writings words is by far the worst trigger for my hand pain, so this scene was tough. you can see some places i just didn't write in text that should be there because i would prefer to sketch out the entire scene instead of the words on a single page following by a week and a half of being unable to draw at all.

jacob is a letter-winged kite -- a type of bird that hunts at night. their eyes are very large due to this. i chose this species because a scene cut from the comic with the late-game act 1 edits was the one where jessie kills a guy much in the same manner she kills jacob here. that was at night, so he was supposed to be a kite.

also included is a reference not related to any scene in idletry: one of samwich's older sisters. i want to draw a side comic with samwich accosting her to join their cult early in its inception. when they speak to jessie for the first time, they are 22 years old. in the side comic, they are probably close to 21, but not there yet. they never state it directly, but they are researching ways to contact jessie over Twiddler, and they need a lesbian for data.

sapphira is a lesbian, if it isn't obvious, and would work quite nicely for their designs.

over time, i developed samwich's mother and their home life, and she's just kind of a nightmare character. she's the world record holder for the most children ever birthed. she has no partner and never has had one, so she accomplishes this through shady dealings with a fertility clinic that agrees to implant a high amount of fertilized eggs into her for generous bribes. the first pregnancy which was probably like. octuplets, was not intentional.
she wanted kids, but without a partner, she achieved this through sperm donation and a clinic. but she REALLY liked the attention she got from the outstanding pregnancy. so she did it a couple more times. and by that point, it was like, "well fuck, there's so many kids now i could be the person tho have the most kids EVER" and it's been history ever since. she has probably close to 140 children.
needless to say, some of her children absolutely despise her and want nothing to do with her -- especially the older ones who've had enough time to really process how fucked up the situation is. this is not ideal for her, because with so many children, she really needs the older ones to basically fill in for her as parents for the younger ones. she will sometimes unleash still-loyal children onto defectors flying monkey style. she is rather famous due to her deranged lifestyle, and it can be difficult for children who want to cut her off to fully move out from under her shadow between her notoriety and the other children who may harass them. many of them put in great efforts to go into hiding, and keep contact with other adult children who've cut ties with their mother.
sapphira is one of those aforementioned adult children. i wanted to eventually write about samwich hunting down a sibling who had become estranged from the family unit. for samwich, they would be doing this for their developing cult, and not their mother, as they also drift away from their family when they become obsessed with jessie. i wanted this sibling-sibling interaction to touch on things like samwich's feelings about authority figures, what jessie has done to improve the world or make it worse, their own family, etc. i also wanted it to show a side of samwich that ISN'T trying to play up a cutesy fawn response type of persona to get what they want.

anyway. the next scene is... i don't want to say the last scene, but it is kind of the last scene of act 1. this scene and the one immediately after are also literally chronologically immediately before and after each other with no time skip or location change. so, to me, it feels like this is the last scene.

i definitely am hoping to go back in act 1 and add some more mean-spirited pranks to ease into this scene, although the other scene i'm working on that will be injected before the "fucked your mom" scene does feature a similar type of antagonism.

this scene ^ will need to be completed before i move on to act 2 as well. so, even if the next scene were the last one in act 1, i'd still have an extra i have to finish drawing before i can get to god jessie...
