Check-in: Browser-Based Build
Added 2022-08-07 15:33:58 +0000 UTCHowdy!
Before we roll browser-based builds of Sileo out to the public, I wanted to do a quick check-in to see how people's experiences were with it! We've had zero issues reported with both the Patreon portal as well as the actual build itself which is encouraging, but only a small portion of people have opted to play this way with most preferring the downloadable versions (which is great, those builds are and likely always will be superior!), so there is always the possibility something was missed or simply not reported.
If you haven't yet taken it for a spin, you can do so here: play.sileo.vn
A couple of things to keep in mind:
One is that performance issues are generally browser or device-specific. Ren'Py is known to run poorly in Firefox, so we recommend you use a Chromium-based browser such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. The same applies to these browsers running on Android.
iOS as well as the Safari browser as a whole are unsupported due to limitations in WebKit - while this does not necessarily mean Sileo will not run at all (though this may indeed be the case), there will most likely be a slew of issues if it does. No sound is a known issue. Please note that these issues are to do with WebKit and Ren'Py and are not within our power to fix, please do not report issues specific to the browser-based version of Sileo if you are running it in Safari or on iOS. (Other browsers on Mac OS are fully supported.) With that said, we're still interested in hearing how your experience went - there are relevant options in the poll below!
Please also consider that the quality of your internet connection and your latency are the biggest factors determining how long the initial preload will take (the download as of the current release is 39MB), how quickly the low detail assets are replaced with their full detail counterparts, and how quickly music/ambient audio tracks will play when required (these things are streamed from the server as they are needed). Users with 5G or high-speed fiber optic connections nearest to California (where our server is located) will have the best possible experience. Slower connections and those a long way from Califonia (or with poor routes due to their specific location) will worsen the experience. With that in mind, I live in New Zealand which is half a world away and my experience is very good (though my connection is gigabit fiber.)
With the above in mind, if you would be so kind as to use the poll below to indicate your experience, we'd be mighty grateful!
Cheers! (Or as Roo might instead put it: Ta, mates!)

PS: Don't be discouraged from choosing the last option, it's not rude! As mentioned above, the downloadable versions will always be the best choice in terms of performance and are the only way to enjoy Sileo's animated sequences as Ren'Py does not (currently) support them. The web version is primarily to give people an easy way to jump in and play on Itch.io without having to download anything, but also an option for you all for any reason at all. It's also available to iOS users as something "to try" with the understanding that it probably won't work properly, but might be better than nothing at all.
Now originally this 'PS' section turned into an ADHD fuelled rant, but for fucks sake I need to stop wasting time like this! To sum up a few key points in very brief form, if you want to know what platform is best to play Sileo on, the pecking order currently looks like this: Windows > Linux = Mac OS > Android > Web.
And a note for Windows users RE Antivirus Products: Norton and Avira antiviruses ship with crypto miners, avast! and AVG are actually the same product with different skin and have a history of selling your information to third parties. Windows Defender is included in Windows 10 & 11 and is a highly effective antivirus product with no nasty bullshit. Uninstall your third party product and let Windows (and or jesus) take the wheel. If you must reinforce your security or you want to reduce the performance impact of your antivirus product, Bitdefender and Kaspersky have long established histories of near flawless catch rates with few false positives and both have smaller performance impacts than Defender, especially Kaspersky which is also my preference of the two from experience, but both are good. Oh, and both offer free versions which do everything you need them to. Don't pay money for an antivirus unless you absolutely absolutely need a feature from their paid versions that you cannot find a suitable free alternative for (...I would however be asking you the question of 'what'). Oh, and the point of this weird out of context AV rant? If your antivirus still gets a false positive from Sileo, get rid of it. That hasn't been a problem for reputable products for at least a year, Windows Defender included! If you still get those AV alerts, someone in China is probably watching you fap. [/rantover]
Comments
Guys if you have problems, please drop a comment! I see several responses above saying you've had issues but no comments to go with them! We can't fix what we don't know about!

2022-08-09 17:47:41 +0000 UTCUnfortunately, that is something entirely on Ren'Py's end that we have no control over. Note however that we have tested save importing and it does work, but your saves need to be in a zip file containing a folder named 'Sileo - Tales of a New Dawn' which contains those saves. It won't work if they're just sitting in the root directory. Note that if you go to "C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\RenPy", this exact folder containing the saves can be found - just zip that up and you're good to go. (On that note, importing web version saves into the downloadable game is a process of taking that folder and extracting it to the above directory - overwriting if asked. Note that save files can also be found alongside the game executable and saves found here are used by the game, but I believe saves found in that directory above will take priority over those found in the game folder should there be a conflict) As for saves disappearing, they are stored as cookies. If you have a program, EG: CCleaner and you've told it to clean cookies from your browser, it will delete your save files in the process. If you want to clear your cookies, I suggest exporting your saves first, cleaning, then reimporting them.
