April Sileo Patreon Builds Now Available!

Psst. Hey. You kids wanna buy some crac- I-I mean a new Sileo update? That’s right, you know what time it is, and apologies it’s a little later than we usually go for, our testing team is bigger than ever and that means they keep finding shit to fix! The good news is we’re all fixed out, and that means you can finally sink your teeth into the new update!

So, what’s new?

Well first of all, Day 18 of Tai’s Route is finally done! Holy crap that took way too long! I promise Day 19 will be wrapped up quicker than that! If not, shoot me, I’ll welcome it! Chapter 6 of Day 18 also introduces Tobias to our overwhelmingly large list of characters! But not just that of course, we get some fresh drama, plenty of sweet moments, some hilarious ramblings and a ton of character development besides!

Another major change in this update is the removal of Analytics, the reasons for which are detailed in the changelog. As of right now, Sileo has zero interaction with the internet. Of course, those external links on the main menu aren’t going to take you far without a connection, but you know what I mean!

One more exciting development is progress towards official support for a web-based version of Sileo. Right now it’s working great, we just want to spend a bit more time with it to improve how it predicts upcoming assets and streams them in before they’re needed. Ren’Py contains a system which should handle this for us, unfortunately, not only is the system not working all that well, it is also completely unresponsive to commands so we can’t do a damn thing to address the issue. I’m unsure if this is just how it is or if there’s a conflict with Sileo’s code somewhere, but I’ve already begun work on my own system that will work even better than Ren’Py’s method for our purposes. How so? Well, Ren’Py’s system only predicts images. Our system can predict anything we want it to. The most notable benefit of this is that we can stream audio in as well, ensuring they start when they’re supposed to and don’t play out of sync with what’s on screen.

We expect to launch this web based version later in the month here on Patreon. It’ll be exclusive to you guys while it’s in beta, rolling out to the public next month assuming all is good. It’ll probably be more like mid-month than anytime soon as I’ve been crunching like crazy these last few days and could use a break before I get stuck in again.

Also this is something I’ll cover again in detail on the actual release, but we will be hosting the Patreon version of the web based client ourselves. This costs money. You might look at what we’re earning on Patreon and think we’re flush with cash but let me assure you you couldn’t be more wrong. That amount supports two people full time. For both CurryCatz and me, it’s our whole income. It’s actually not enough. We’re both supplementing our income in other ways to make it work while crossing our fingers that in time, it will grow to be enough to keep food on the table and our lights on all by itself. Self-hosting the web client comes out of that money. We consider that cost covered simply by you guys supporting us on Patreon, but please do not share the link around. We will be keeping tabs on how many unique users access the site and if the numbers don’t add up, we’ll just take it down. I’d love to not have to say these sorts of things, but considering there are tampered with versions of Patreon-only Sileo updates floating around, we feel compelled to make these things very clear.

(PS: To whoever it is making that one specific barebones web version, I don’t know what you have against Kyrex, but preventing people from accessing his sex scene is pretty uncool. Let people make their own decisions, don’t force yours on them instead. Also, your link to our Patreon doesn’t work. Would be lovely if you’d fix it!)

Anyway, enough serious talk! We haven’t finished listing what’s new yet! This update adds 3 new outfits for Adrian. There’s Tai’s Clothes, as worn on Day 8, Axel’s Clothes, as worn on Day 15/16, and a recolour of his usual jacket, shirt and jeans which we’ve swapped out as evenly as possible throughout the existing story. The first two aren’t seen much/at all outside of the character portrait, but they’re in the gallery and are unlocked upon completion of Day 8 and Day 15 respectively.

There’s also two new backgrounds! Eric no longer lives in a stock photo nightmare (though his house still looks like one from the outside, that’s a work in progress!) and the abandoned house in the woods no longer looks like it was abandoned by us as well!

Aside from that, a lot of fixes and a lot of improvements! Note that we’ve cleared the compatibility data in this update, saves might restart from recent checkpoints and content may no longer fast forward as if you haven’t seen it – there’s a setting that you can change which lets you skip regardless, you might want to turn that on!

So plenty of shit to sink your teeth into, and plenty more coming to get excited about! Enough from me, time to answer the age old question… ‘where da monkey at?!’

· PATREON: Adds Two New Chapters to Tai's Route (Day 18) and Introduces a New Character: Tobias the Macaque!

At long last, Day 18 is completed, and with it comes a brand new character! The much anticipated Tobias finally makes an appearance and this mischievous macaque is sure to drag Adrian and Diego into all manner of diabolical schemes! Though with two days left in the route, how will he ever find time?! Well, it just so happens he plays a major role in another character's route...!

· PUBLIC: Our Brand New User Interface Debuts + 1 New Chapter In Tai's Route!

Our new user interface is leaving beta and arriving for everybody as of 0.41! In addition, last month saw our Patreon Supporters receive a surprise new chapter midway through the month - this chapter is also included in this public release! Of course, this build contains all of the fixes and improvements that featured in 0.40.5 and 0.40.6 as well!

· Sileo No Longer Uses Analytics

The module provided by the Ren'Py devs is ancient and doesn't play all that well with modern Ren'Py releases. It also doesn't support the current generation Google Analytics and relies on an old GA system (for which it doesn't support anything more than extremely basic functionality to begin with) which dramatically reduces the value of the information the system can obtain in the first place. Additionally, functionality required by the module is also not present in Ren'Py Web - more on that below. Finally, it doesn't matter how honest and forthcoming you are, the fact is that 'analytics' and 'telemetry' are dirty words these days and attract distrust and suspicion regardless of whether it's warranted. With that in mind, the 0.41 update removes every last trace of this system from the game code. This means that as things stand, Sileo does not connect to the internet at all under any circumstances.

· PATREON: Official Support for Ren'Py Web! (To Be Released Later in April)

The 0.41 update adds support for Ren'PyWeb, the browser-based implementation of the Ren'Py engine. Previous versions of Sileo did not support the web-based client due to several systems using functionality that isn't present in the web-based engine. With the removal of analytics and a number of workarounds that disable problematic functionality on the web-based release, it is now possible for us to offer a browser-based version of Sileo. This version only requires a small 36MB download upfront and will download the remaining assets as they're needed (a high-speed connection is strongly recommended). Note that this does not work on iOS - this is a limitation in WebKit which apple requires all iOS web browsers to be based on. Ren'Py web works as expected on Android. Please also be aware that animated sequences are unsupported on Ren'Py Web, and that in general, Ren'Py Web runs worse than it's executable counterparts - if performance is an issue, please download Sileo instead. At this stage, the public release will be hosted by Itch and playable directly on our Itch Page while the Patreon release will be hosted in-house. This feature will be made publicly available once it leaves beta and will only be available to our Patreon Supporters while in beta.

Note that there is still some work left to do on the web version and it makes no sense to delay the release of the other versions for this. The web version will be released later in the month once we've completed work on it.

· 3x New Outfits for Adrian:

o 'Axel's Attire': The too-small clothing given to him to wear by Axel's parents on Day 15. We've also made a couple of small adjustments to the overall sequence on Day 15 and Day 16 to give the outfit literally any screen time.

o 'Tai's Attire': The 'Class of 99' Shirt Tai lends to Adrian on Day 8. Adrian now wears this throughout the entire day where applicable.

o Casualclothes 3: A variant of Adrian's usual outfit, featuring a red jacket and black pants which he now wears frequently.

· 2x New Backgrounds:

o Woodcrest Woods House - The abandoned building in the woods first visited on Day 4.

o Eric's House Interior - The interior of Eric's house, as seen on Day 5.

· Reorganized and Consolidated Game Code. Following the UI update, it was getting rather unwieldy!

· A list of fixes and improvements with so much girth it'd make Eric blush!

· Clears Ren'Py compatibility data, fixing a strange bug which cause characters to show up in places they shouldn't in the 0.40 release. This may cause some issues with save files, but in our testing, we found compatibility to be very high, though some save files may restart from the beginning of the current chapter.
