Hello my gorgeous and soft nerds. Please do get snacks because this is a CHONKY sketchbook tour!
A few notes on this baby:
• My beloved Ugly Sketchbook is a RENDER "no show thru" sketchbook, and my fav pens are: Pentel Slicci, Sakura Gelly Roll in White, MUJI hexagonal and Sharpie. I've been using a Pentel Brush Pen too!
• As always I included all references if you wonder how the original looks like. I've realized my favorite mantra when drawing is "no one knows the original" so no one knows how accurate my sketch is! Now, even though you guys know and have seen my references, it's been a HUGE relief to know there's no "reference police" and no one tells me "yo this sketch doesn't look exactly like the reference!" so please repeat yourself this mantra to yourself when you feel insecure when using pictures as references
• Speaking of pictures as references: I've been taking some "creative liberties" lately! There's a picture of Natalia and Charlie (cast from Stranger Things) and the coat she's wearing is plain grey, but last minute I decided to add a fun print on it. Since I'm trying to add and practice more with prints and patterns, I thought it gave the sketch so much more character!
• I love to find pictures on Instagram that have multiple poses in one post. Like that person wearing overalls (is that what they're called?) and doing these incredible poses, I LOVE to do a double-spread and play/break compositions. Have you guys tried this?
• I also noticed I started drawing LIPS! oh yeah baby, lips! Before my Ugly Sketchbook I used to draw lips as one line, but now I'm drawing lips on all characters. I noticed lips are so important to give personality to a character (almost as much as noses and hair) and now I can't stop drawing them.
I'd love to start drawing more from imagination. I LOVE using references, they allow me to practice and understand human figure. But I've also noticed how much I depend on working with them; like I've noticed I get frustrated if I don't find a good reference picture. Have you guys experienced that?
I hope you liked this month's Sketchbook Toooour! Please let me know if you have any questions : ) See you ALL tomorrooooow! Have a lovely rest of your day!
