"Yeah, yeah, sorry. I know I'm late today."
Vin looked up into the boughs above, to the lines of feathery blue puffballs situated atop each of them. Dozens of beady, black eyes judged first her, then the dish of seeds and nuts she held out in front of her, the offering seemingly of no interest.
"Come on already, don't give me that crap. I got a lot to do today." She gave the dish a shake. Instantly, tiny purple crests rose one by one, tiny heads popping up from their hiding places within round, ruffled bodies. One peeped a complaint, then another, the others following in rapid succession as they began to swoop down from their perch.
"Yeah, that's what I thought," Vin laughed, grinning from ear to ear and holding the dish out to catch a few of the stubborn little birds. "I don't have to do this, you know. But you guys're so picky, I wonder if you'd even eat if I didn't feed you." She supposed it was her mistake for spoiling them like this, but the company was nice, at least.
