The rape bit wasn't surprising, based on what he was saying to her when she was in the cage. He was using classic child abuser grooming behavior. Telling her she was special, telling her he was the only one who understood her, telling her he was the only way to "salvation". I'm no expert, but It was definitely headed in a statutory rape direction.
