Another single-use item from the first Daragaard instalment - the Sailor's Last Breath bottle. A fantastic item to have on you if you expect to be taking an extended period on a water vessel, and you have a particular poor faith in the captain, the weather or your nasty DM!
The Midseas claimed countless vessels during the times following the Second War. As naval skirmishes and pirate ambushes increased, the need for innovative survival tools became critical. It was during this era that the "Sailor's Last Breath" was conceived by ingenious storm sorcerers and adept mages who served within the various navies of Sacria, though the original idea is claimed to have been coined by a member of the elite Wigian naval force the Shiverglades.
Crafted initially as a rare safeguard for elite naval officers, these magical bottles contained a breath of air, magically preserved and capable of sustaining life underwater for several hours. As tales of miraculous survivals began to spread, the demand for these bottles soared beyond the military to reach merchant sailors and even the most notorious pirates.
No longer a rare item, the Sailor's Last Breath became a staple of maritime life. By the testimonies of seasoned sailors, it soon became commonplace for at least half of a ship's permanent crew to be equipped with these life-saving bottles.
In modern times the bottles are relatively abundant yet retain a high price due to their vital importance and the complex magic involved in their creation. Ports and dockside markets across Athana prominently feature these bottles, often priced beyond the reach of ordinary seafolk but considered essential for any who dare traverse the unpredictable and unforgiving sea.
