In my experience, the characterisation of the main character is the number one thing people take issue with in this adaptation. Given how little he emotes, his narration is vital to understanding how he thinks/feels, and they probably went a little crazy when it came time to prune it down for the anime. It's still a really fun show, and a lot of the broader plot-related themes still shine through. If anything, it makes me more excited to hear what your take-away is by the end of the series. p.s. it might be time for someone to start keeping a tally of how many times you mention Nietzsche lol

From the light novel, his inner monologue seems to be implying he really is genuinely getting mad at her and not faking it. Ii is still obviously a human person with emotions, he's just really good at hiding them behind the nonsense. He often bends his ideals when speaking to people, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have his own ideals burried deep down. Maki, on the other hand is just really good at pushing his buttons in order to get some genuine emotions out of him, because she can see past all the nonsense as a mind reader. She's essentially giving a form his apparent formlessness by acknowledging it as formless. I'm unsure how well this comes across to anime-onlies, but Ii REALLY hates Maki with a passion. He insults her in his inner monologue constantly because he really hates having his mind pried into.
