The Warriors (1979) - Monster Movie Pick - WATCH ALONG

This movie was picked out by one of my monster patrons. There aren't many movies that I dislike but I got to say I didn't care for this one. The predatory undertones is what made me dislike it, kinda just killed the vibe for me (Ajax; The Warriors threatening Mercy). I personally don't think it's necessary to make characters sexually predatory to make them tough or masculine--- as evidenced by many masculine male roles in cinema that achieve toughness and rigidity without it (e.g. Arnold Schwarzenegger). I understand that they are gang members, I get that this is a 70s movie, but what I don't get is why writers make characters like that, let alone the protagonists of a story. I'm not going to even get started on Mercy, she made some illogical decisions that really bothered me as well. Needless to say I was not the biggest fan of how the characters were written. I realize my opinion may be unpopular but that is just me being honest, not my kind of movie. Was cool to see a young David Patrick Kelly and James Remar though, I was digging the 70s/80s vibe, and I liked how all the different gangs had coordinated outfits.

I mainly recommend because of the costumes and 70s feel of it.

Honestly I can understand the difficulty to watch this movie with modern eyes. I saw this movie back when they adapted this into a video game in the 2000's and I thought it was a cool concept. Though as I got older this movie as well as a few others from the 70's though good are rough around the edges when you look at them today. I'd like to think that movies from this decade are some of the best in all genres and yet it reflects the real world reality of what the 70's were. I'm just glad you gave it a shot and who knows this movie has a funny way of being referenced by other types of media.

I love Ferris wheels too. Last one I was on was in Chicago in 2019 and I was looking forward to checking out the one in Dubai when I was there but it was closed! I was devastated! There’s an embarrassment of riches when it comes to good movies from the 1970s. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the next one from that decade, whatever it is.

Wes Stewart

It is a rough movie in scenes, I tend to look at it almost like a dark comic like The Crow. These people are not hero's by any stretch of the imagination, and the movie makes it clear. Thats because this is not a story about heroisim, its about survival.

Deadly Mouse

I had her add Godzilla 1954 to her watch list 😀

Todzilla

Black and white, we gotta add the classic CASABLANCA to her list. Though, my personal noir favorite is still, THE THIRD MAN.

Wolf and Cub Gaming

Has LL ever watched a movie from the 50s? If I'm ever picked, black and white or 50s it'll be. 😀

Michael Beck was one of those actors from that era that had a promising career ahead of him but didn't get the roles he needed to make it happen. He bowed out of acting 1st in 2005 then came back for a while then, it appears bowed out for good in 2015. He's 73 now. He did have a stint in voice acting, voicing audio books. The only others that stayed active are Sean Patrick Kelley and James Remar (Raymar). Kelley has chiefly played bad guys while James Remar has done action movies, dramas and comedies. He's a fairly versatile actor. I do have to say, the acting in this seemed pretty stiff, except for Cyrus...over the top Cyrus...'CAN YOU DIG IIIT?' That line cracks me up. Thank you Lauren, as always.

If everyone liked the same thing

If everyone doesn’t liked the same thing, it would be a boring place. It’s not my favorite movie but I liked it. I lived in New York when I was younger. Loved the bat fight!!! Had few knife fights when I was younger. It’s tough when u grow up poor. I hope if I get a chance to pick a movie u love it. It’s a more enjoyable experience. Keep the reactions coming. Thanks Perry

This movie did reflect the societal stereotypes of the times, as Hollywood unfortunately chose to portray them. My biggest memory of this movie was the soundtrack. It was never a periodic nostalgia watch, quite honestly because the characters were over done and the dialog was kind of hokey, like it was written by someone who 'thought' they knew what gang members sounded like. I'm still going to watch with you Lauren. I very much value your opinion and I'm glad to hear your thoughts during the movie. Thank you for doing this. Peace, light and love. ❤✌️🥰
