Chapter 1: Bonds Beyond Worlds
Added 2025-03-29 23:08:55 +0000 UTCThe evening sun cast long shadows across Andrew's bedroom as he meticulously packed and repacked his backpack. Tomorrow would mark the official start of his journey as a Pokémon trainer, and despite having prepared for this moment his entire second life, he couldn't help but feel both excited and anxious.
"What do you think, Sionna? Too many potions? Not enough?" he asked, glancing at the Vulpix curled comfortably on his pillow.
Since bringing her home two days ago, Sionna had barely left his side. His parents had offered to prepare a special Pokémon bed for her in the corner of his room, but she had pointedly ignored it, preferring instead to sleep curled against Andrew's neck or on his pillow. His mother had simply smiled knowingly, saying, "Some bonds can't be explained."
Sionna raised her head, amber eyes studying the array of supplies spread across the floor. She made a soft huffing sound and hopped down from the bed, padding over to nudge aside one of the three antidote bottles with her nose.
"Too many antidotes, huh?" Andrew laughed. "I suppose you're right. Route 101 doesn't have that many poison-types."
He sat back on his heels, watching as Sionna inspected his packing job. Even these simple moments filled him with wonder—interacting with a real, living Pokémon. Not a card, not a game sprite, but a warm, intelligent creature with her own personality.
But there was something more here, something that had been gnawing at him since their emotional reunion at Professor Birch's lab. The intensity of their immediate connection, the way she had reacted to the name "Sionna" without hesitation...
Andrew reached into his pocket and pulled out his new Pokédex. He hadn't yet used it to scan Sionna formally, partly because he'd been too caught up in the emotions of their meeting, but also because he was slightly nervous about what he might discover.
"Sionna," he said softly, causing her ears to perk up immediately. "I'd like to scan you with the Pokédex, if that's okay."
The Vulpix tilted her head, then nodded once, sitting down in front of him with perfect posture, her six tails fanned out behind her.
Andrew pointed the device at her and pressed the scan button. The Pokédex lit up, projecting a holographic display of Vulpix data.
"Vulpix, the Fox Pokémon," the automated voice intoned. "At birth, it has one white tail. The tail separates into six if this Pokémon receives plenty of love from its Trainer. The six tails become magnificently curled."
Standard information, nothing he didn't already know from his previous life. But then the screen shifted to display Sionna's specific data.
"This Vulpix is female, approximately two years old. Ability: Flash Fire. Hidden Ability: Drought (currently dormant)."
Andrew's eyes widened slightly. A Vulpix with the Drought ability was rare, typically only found in Alola as the ice-type variant or in very specific regions for the fire-type. And for one so young to already have such advanced abilities was remarkable.
The Pokédex continued: "Current moves: Ember, Quick Attack, Confuse Ray, and... analyzing... Will-O-Wisp."
"Will-O-Wisp already?" Andrew murmured, impressed. "That's a pretty advanced move for a young Vulpix."
He stared at the move list with growing amazement. "These are exactly the moves I always tried to teach my Vulpix in the games. And Drought... I would spend hours soft-resetting or breeding just to get a Vulpix with that hidden ability."
Sionna's tails swished with what appeared to be pride.
"It's like you're the exact Vulpix I always tried to create," Andrew said softly. "The perfect moveset I'd always aim for in competitive play, the rare ability I'd hunt for... it can't be coincidence."
But it was the next section that truly caught him off guard.
"Note: Anomalous energy signature detected. This Pokémon shows unusual aura patterns consistent with interdimensional exposure. Exercise caution."
Andrew nearly dropped the Pokédex. "Interdimensional exposure?" he whispered, looking at Sionna with new eyes.
The Vulpix held his gaze steadily, as if waiting for him to make the connection.
Andrew closed the Pokédex and set it aside. His heart was racing now. Could it be possible? Was there more to their connection than just random chance?
"Sionna," he said carefully, "I need to ask you something, and it might sound strange."
He moved to sit cross-legged on the floor in front of her, bringing them to eye level with each other.
"Do you... remember another world? A world where Pokémon weren't real, but existed as cards and games?"
Sionna's reaction was immediate and unmistakable. Her ears flattened against her head, and a small whimper escaped her throat. She stepped forward, placing one paw on Andrew's knee, her eyes never leaving his.
"You do remember, don't you?" Andrew breathed, scarcely able to believe it. "But how is that possible? You were just a card—an image on a piece of paper."
Sionna shook her head vigorously, as if rejecting this characterization. She jumped into his lap and rose up on her hind legs, placing her front paws on his chest to look directly into his eyes. The intensity of her gaze was startling.
"You were... more than that?" Andrew guessed, trying to understand.
Sionna nodded, then touched her nose to his chest, directly over his heart.
"We were connected somehow? Even then?"
Another nod, more emphatic this time. She jumped down and pawed at his backpack, where he had packed a few mementos from home. Understanding her intent, Andrew pulled out his journal and flipped to the first page where he had sketched a Vulpix from memory during the first week after his memories returned.
Sionna looked at the drawing, then back at Andrew, before tapping her paw insistently on the page.
"This specific Vulpix?" Andrew asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "You were this specific Vulpix? In every game I played? In my cards?"
Sionna nodded vigorously, her eyes bright with emotion.
Andrew's mind reeled as memories from his past life rushed in. The way his Vulpix in Pokémon Red always seemed to land critical hits at exactly the right moment. How his Vulpix card would somehow always end up on top of his deck when he needed it most. The strange dreams he'd had where his Vulpix from the games seemed to be trying to tell him something.
"That's why you always felt... different. Special," Andrew said, his voice thick with emotion. "Every Vulpix I encountered, in every game, every card... it was always you, wasn't it? Somehow, across different media, different formats... your essence was there."
Sionna climbed back into his lap and nodded, touching her nose to his hand.
"But that's impossible," Andrew whispered, though he knew that in a world where humans could be reincarnated into a universe they once believed fictional, perhaps nothing was truly impossible. "How could you exist across different forms like that?"
The Vulpix gave a small shrug of her shoulders, as if to say she didn't understand the mechanics of it either.
"Did you... choose me? Or was I somehow drawn to you from the beginning?"
Sionna closed her eyes for a moment, as if considering how to answer. Then she placed one paw on his wrist and another over her own heart, connecting them with a deliberate movement.
"Both," Andrew interpreted. "We chose each other. A connection that worked both ways."
Sionna's eyes seemed to smile as she nodded in agreement.
"And when I died saving that little girl... you felt it?"
Sionna's eyes glistened with what could only be tears. She made a soft keening sound that broke Andrew's heart. Yes, she had felt it.
"The entity that brought me here—it saw our connection. It said someone was waiting for me." Andrew's voice dropped to a whisper. "That was you, wasn't it? You were waiting for me here."
Sionna curled herself against his chest, her small body trembling slightly. Andrew wrapped his arms around her, cradling her gently.
"All those years I spent obsessed with Vulpix, defending you against the meta-gamers, keeping you in every deck and team I built... it wasn't just random preference, was it? Somehow, across worlds, we were already bonded."
Sionna looked up at him and nodded once more.
"And when I was reborn here, you sensed it?"
The Vulpix's tails swished in affirmation.
"Is that why you were at Mt. Chimney? Were you looking for me?"
Sionna's expression conveyed both confirmation and frustration, as if the journey had been long and difficult.
"The injuries Professor Birch found—what happened to you?"
At this, Sionna growled softly, her hackles rising slightly.
"You were attacked? By what?"
She pawed at the ground, clearly trying to communicate something complex without the ability to speak human language. After a moment of apparent frustration, she went to Andrew's desk and nudged at a pencil and his journal.
"You want me to write something?" Andrew asked, surprised.
Sionna shook her head, then placed her paw on the blank page. To Andrew's astonishment, she began tracing patterns with her claws—not random scratches, but deliberate lines. When she finished, she looked at him expectantly.
On the page was a crude but recognizable drawing of what appeared to be a dark, shadowy form with glowing eyes.
"A Dark-type Pokémon attacked you?" Andrew guessed. "Something that didn't want you to find me?"
Sionna's expression confirmed his suspicion, and a chill ran down Andrew's spine. If their reunion had been deliberately opposed by something or someone, that suggested their bond was significant enough to threaten... what? Or whom?
"Listen to me, Sionna," Andrew said, suddenly serious. "Whatever is happening here, whatever our connection means—we'll figure it out together. If something tried to keep us apart, there must be a reason. And I'm guessing our journey isn't going to be just about gym badges and the Pokémon League."
Sionna's eyes reflected a depth of understanding no ordinary Pokémon should possess. She nodded solemnly, then climbed up to her now-customary position around his neck, her warm weight reassuring against his skin.
Andrew reached up to stroke her soft fur, his mind racing with implications. His second chance at life was clearly more complex than he'd initially thought. The entity that had brought him here hadn't just randomly selected him for his heroic act—it had preserved a bond that somehow transcended worlds.
"We should tell my parents about our departure plans," Andrew said finally, standing up. But as he moved toward the door, Sionna tensed, her claws gently gripping his shoulder.
"What is it?"
The Vulpix's expression was clear: keep our secret.
"You don't think I should tell them about... us? About our connection?"
Sionna shook her head firmly.
"You're probably right," Andrew conceded after a moment's thought. "They'd either not believe me or worry too much. And if something dangerous is actually trying to interfere with us..."
He left the thought unfinished, but the implication was clear. Better to keep his parents out of potential danger until he understood more.
"Okay, just between us then. But when we leave tomorrow, we need to be extra careful. If something attacked you once while you were looking for me, it might try again now that we're together."
Sionna nuzzled his cheek reassuringly, a small flame briefly flickering between her jaws—a clear message that she would protect him.
Andrew smiled, feeling a complex mixture of emotions—excitement for the journey ahead, anxiety about the unknown threats they might face, but above all, profound gratitude for the impossible second chance he'd been given, and for the bond that had somehow survived death itself.
"Together, then," he whispered. "Whatever comes next, we face it together."
Sionna's soft purr of agreement resonated against his skin, sealing a promise that spanned across worlds and beyond death—a soulbond that neither of them yet fully understood, but both would defend with everything they had.
Andrew sat on the edge of his bed, his mind still processing everything. The confirmation that Sionna really was connected to his previous life's beloved Vulpix had left him in awe. But there was something else nagging at him—a purpose that had defined his relationship with Pokémon in his first life.
"Sionna," he said thoughtfully, "do you remember how I always defended you in my previous life? Against all those players who said Vulpix wasn't strong enough for competitive play?"
The Vulpix's ears perked up immediately. She nodded, her amber eyes gleaming with what looked like fond memory.
"I was thinking," Andrew continued, idly stroking her fur, "that maybe that could be part of our journey here too. Not just collecting badges and entering the League, but proving something I always believed—that with the right training and bond, any Pokémon can be incredible."
Sionna tilted her head, clearly listening intently.
"In my first life, everyone was obsessed with tier lists and meta choices. They'd dismiss so many Pokémon as 'weak' or 'useless' without ever giving them a chance." A hint of old frustration colored his voice. "But I always believed that was wrong. That the supposed 'weakness' of certain Pokémon was more about lazy training than any actual limitation."
Andrew's eyes lit up with growing enthusiasm. "What if that becomes our mission here? To build a team of Pokémon that others overlook or underestimate, and show the world what they're truly capable of?"
Sionna's reaction was immediate and unmistakable. She leapt to her feet, tails fanning out behind her in excitement. A small flame danced between her bared teeth as she gave an enthusiastic yip of agreement.
Andrew laughed at her response. "I'll take that as a yes! You always were a bit of a spitfire, weren't you? Ready to prove the doubters wrong."
The Vulpix puffed out her chest proudly, then mimicked a battle stance that made Andrew smile even wider.
"We could look for Pokémon like Rattata, Zigzagoon, Sentret—species that most trainers overlook in favor of rarer or more traditionally powerful types." Andrew's mind was now racing with possibilities. "With the right training and strategy, we could show everyone that the heart and bond between trainer and Pokémon matters more than any natural advantage."
Sionna nodded vigorously, clearly excited by the prospect. She jumped down from the bed and made a show of practicing Quick Attack across the bedroom floor, her speed impressive even in the confined space.
"Look at you," Andrew said with admiration. "Only two years old and already faster than most mature Vulpix. You're already defying expectations."
He reached for his notebook and began jotting down ideas. "We'll need to be creative with our training methods. Play to each Pokémon's unique strengths rather than trying to force them into conventional battle styles."
Sionna hopped back onto the bed and peered at his notes, occasionally tapping a paw at certain points as if making suggestions.
"You're right," Andrew acknowledged, "status moves will be key. Speed and strategy over raw power." He added some notes about move combinations and training exercises.
The Vulpix's eyes sparkled with determination as she looked up at Andrew.
"This feels right," he said, ruffling the fur between her ears. "Not just chasing badges for their own sake, but having a purpose—showing the world that every Pokémon has value, that so-called 'weak' Pokémon can achieve greatness with the right partner."
Sionna made a soft noise of agreement, then curled up against his side, her warm presence comforting and familiar despite the newness of their physical bond.
"Tomorrow," Andrew said with quiet determination, "we start proving them wrong. One battle at a time."
The Vulpix's tails swished in anticipation as she settled down to sleep. Tomorrow would indeed mark the beginning of their journey—not just as trainer and Pokémon, but as partners with a mission that transcended worlds. To challenge perceptions, to elevate the overlooked, and to forge a path uniquely their own in this world of endless possibilities.
Through the window, stars twinkled in the Hoenn night sky, witnesses to a promise made between two souls whose connection defied the boundaries of reality itself.
