CHAPTER 3: NEW ALLIANCES

Andrew's eyes fluttered open as a peculiar sensation spread throughout his body. The searing pain in his chest was rapidly fading, replaced by a surge of energy that seemed to flow through every cell. He gasped, sitting up suddenly on the bed in Kami's healing chamber.

"Easy there," came a familiar voice. Goku stood beside him, smiling broadly. "Senzu beans work fast, but it can be a shock to the system."

Andrew glanced down at his chest in amazement. Where once had been a severe burn from Raditz's energy blast, now there was only smooth skin. His torn gi had been replaced with a fresh one, similar to his original but with the Lookout's symbol added to the back.

"Senzu bean?" Andrew repeated, patting his restored body in disbelief. "But how—"

"I flew down to Korin's Tower while you were unconscious," Goku explained. "Figured we could use some healing after that fight, and Mr. Popo said you were in bad shape."

Korin, the immortal cat guardian, poked his head into the room. "So this is the time traveler everyone's talking about," he mused, leaning on his staff as he studied Andrew with ancient eyes. "Interesting energy signature you've got there. Not quite from around here, are you?"

Andrew bowed respectfully. "Master Korin. It's an honor to meet you." He couldn't help the small thrill that ran through him—another legendary character from the series, now standing before him in the flesh.

"Hmph. At least you've got manners," Korin nodded approvingly. "I've brought a few more senzu beans for your upcoming challenges. Sounds like you'll need them."

The cat tossed a small pouch to Goku, who caught it with ease. "Thanks, Korin!" he said cheerfully. "These will definitely come in handy."

"Just try not to need them too soon," Korin admonished before turning to leave. "Growing these things isn't easy, you know."

Andrew swung his legs off the bed, marveling at how completely the senzu bean had restored him. "Thank you, Goku. I should have thought to get these beforehand."

"Hey, no problem!" Goku replied with his characteristic grin. "You saved both me and Piccolo today. That's what matters."

Andrew nodded, still adjusting to the reality that they had successfully altered the timeline. Goku was alive. Piccolo was alive. Already, things were unfolding differently than in the original series.

"Where is everyone?" Andrew asked, noticing the room was otherwise empty.

"Kami and Mr. Popo are showing Chi-Chi and Gohan around the Lookout," Goku explained. "And Piccolo... well, that's a bit strange."

"Strange how?" Andrew asked, though he suspected he knew what Goku meant.

"He's been asking about Gohan," Goku said, his tone a mixture of confusion and concern. "Wanted to know how old he was, if he'd had any training. It's weird."

Andrew suppressed a smile. Even without Goku's death, Piccolo's interest in Gohan's potential was emerging—a fundamental connection that had transformed the Namekian in the original timeline.

"In my timeline, Piccolo became Gohan's first mentor," Andrew explained, standing up to test his restored strength. "He was the one who recognized Gohan's hidden power before anyone else."

Goku looked surprised. "Piccolo? Training my son?" He frowned slightly. "Chi-Chi would never allow that."

A commotion from outside interrupted their conversation—raised voices echoing through the Lookout's corridors. They hurried out to investigate, emerging into the main courtyard to find a tense standoff.

Chi-Chi stood protectively in front of Gohan, her face flushed with anger. Opposite her was Piccolo, arms crossed, expression impassive but intense. Between them, Kami attempted to mediate, with Mr. Popo hovering anxiously nearby.

"—absolutely not!" Chi-Chi was saying, her voice rising with maternal fury. "My son is going to be a scholar, not a fighter!"

"You're blind to what's in front of you," Piccolo retorted. "The boy has power—significant power. I can sense it even now. His potential exceeds both yours and Goku's."

Gohan peeked around his mother's legs, looking at Piccolo with curiosity rather than fear—another divergence from what Andrew would have expected.

"What's going on here?" Goku asked, approaching the group with Andrew close behind.

"This... this green monster wants to train Gohan!" Chi-Chi exclaimed, pointing accusingly at Piccolo. "As if I'd ever allow such a thing!"

Goku looked between his wife and his former rival, clearly unsure how to respond. "Well, Chi-Chi, if what Andrew says is true, we're going to need all the help we can get when these other Saiyans arrive..."

"Don't you dare, Goku!" Chi-Chi warned, her eyes flashing dangerously. "Gohan is four years old! He's supposed to be studying, not fighting aliens!"

Andrew stepped forward carefully. "Mrs. Son, I understand your concerns. In my timeline, Gohan became both a warrior and a scholar. His intelligence and his fighting ability complemented each other."

Chi-Chi turned her glare on Andrew. "And who asked you? You show up out of nowhere with these wild stories about other timelines and Saiyans, and suddenly I'm supposed to hand my son over to my husband's worst enemy for training?"

"Mom," Gohan's small voice piped up, surprising everyone. "I want to help Dad fight the bad guys."

The courtyard fell silent as all eyes turned to the young boy. Gohan, normally shy and obedient, stood a little straighter as he continued. "If more bad people are coming to hurt Earth, I want to help protect it. Like Dad does."

Chi-Chi's expression softened as she looked down at her son. "Gohan, sweetie, you don't have to fight. Your father and these others will handle it."

"Actually," Andrew interjected gently, "in my timeline, Gohan became one of Earth's most powerful defenders. His potential exceeds even Goku's in many ways."

Kami nodded sagely. "I sense the truth in this. The boy has remarkable latent power."

Piccolo, who had been silently watching this exchange, uncrossed his arms. "I don't care about your permission, woman. I'm simply stating facts. The boy has power that could be useful against the Saiyans." His eyes narrowed as he looked at Gohan. "But without training, that power is worse than useless—it's a liability."

Chi-Chi bristled at Piccolo's tone, but before she could respond, Goku placed a hand on her shoulder. "Chi-Chi, let's talk about this later, okay? Right now, we need to let our friends know what's happening. They need to prepare too."

This suggestion seemed to momentarily distract Chi-Chi from her standoff with Piccolo. "Your friends? You mean Master Roshi and the others?"

Goku nodded. "Yeah. Andrew and I should go to Kame House and explain everything. Maybe you and Gohan should come too? Get away from the Lookout for a while?" The last suggestion was clearly meant to separate his family from Piccolo.

Andrew recognized the diplomatic solution Goku was attempting. "That's actually a good idea," he agreed. "We need to organize Earth's defenders as quickly as possible. And there are some things at Kame House that could help us."

Chi-Chi hesitated, glancing suspiciously at Piccolo before nodding reluctantly. "Fine. Anything to get Gohan away from... him."

Piccolo snorted dismissively but made no move to argue. Instead, he turned to Kami. "I'll remain here. We have matters to discuss about these coming Saiyans."

Kami raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by Piccolo's willingness to cooperate, even marginally. "Very well. We shall await your return," he said to Goku and Andrew.

As they prepared to depart, Andrew pulled Goku aside. "One more thing—you should get some extra senzu beans before we leave for King Kai's. From what Kami described, Snake Way is long, and there's no food in Otherworld for the living."

Goku's eyes widened comically. "No food? For how long?"

"The journey could take months," Andrew explained, fighting back a smile at Goku's predictable reaction to food scarcity.

"Months?!" Goku looked horrified. "I better get more beans from Korin before we go!"

Within minutes, they were airborne—Goku carrying Chi-Chi while Gohan rode on the Flying Nimbus, with Andrew flying alongside them. As they soared away from the Lookout, Andrew glanced back to see Piccolo and Kami standing in unusual proximity, already deep in discussion. Another change to the timeline—one that might have significant implications for their preparation against the coming Saiyans.

Kame House appeared exactly as Andrew remembered from countless episodes—a small pink house on a tiny island, isolated in the vast blue ocean. As they descended, several figures emerged from the building, shading their eyes against the sun as they looked up.

"Hey! It's Goku!" Krillin's voice called out, his excitement palpable even from a distance.

They landed on the beach, where Master Roshi, Krillin, and Bulma were waiting. Bulma immediately rushed forward to greet Chi-Chi and coo over Gohan, while Krillin approached Goku with a wide grin.

"Long time no see, buddy! And who's this?" Krillin asked, eyeing Andrew curiously.

"This is Andrew," Goku introduced. "He's... well, it's complicated. But he helped me defeat a really strong enemy today."

"Enemy? What enemy?" Roshi inquired, stepping forward, his sunglasses glinting in the afternoon light.

"That's why we're here," Goku said, his expression growing serious. "We need to talk to everyone. Is Yamcha around?"

"He's inside with Puar and Oolong," Bulma answered. "What's going on, Goku? You look worried."

"Let's gather everyone," Andrew suggested. "This concerns all of Earth's defenders."

Soon, they were all seated inside Kame House—a surreal experience for Andrew, being in the iconic living room with characters he'd watched for years. Yamcha, Puar, and Oolong had joined them, and all eyes were now fixed on Goku and Andrew as they explained the situation.

Andrew let Goku take the lead in describing Raditz's arrival and the battle that had ensued. When Goku mentioned that Raditz had claimed to be his brother, the room erupted in shocked exclamations.

"You're an alien?" Bulma gasped, staring at Goku in disbelief.

"Apparently," Goku replied, scratching the back of his head sheepishly. "From a race called Saiyans. It explains a lot, actually—like why I had a tail."

"And now there are two more of these Saiyans coming to Earth?" Krillin asked, his voice tinged with alarm. "Even stronger than the one you fought today?"

"Much stronger," Andrew confirmed, speaking up. "In one year, they'll arrive looking for the Dragon Balls. And they're powerful enough to destroy this planet if they choose."

"How do you know all this?" Yamcha questioned, eyeing Andrew suspiciously. "Who exactly are you?"

Andrew exchanged a glance with Goku, who nodded encouragingly. Taking a deep breath, Andrew explained his origin as briefly as he could—a visitor from another reality where their world's events were known to him, sent by the Supreme Kai of Time to prevent a catastrophic breakdown in the timeline.

The room fell silent as they processed this information, skepticism evident on most faces.

"That's... quite a story," Roshi finally said, adjusting his sunglasses. "Hard to believe, I must say."

"I know it sounds crazy," Andrew acknowledged. "But I can prove it." He turned to each person in turn. "Krillin, you were killed by King Piccolo's henchman Tambourine, which triggered Goku's hunt for revenge. Master Roshi, you tried to seal King Piccolo with the Evil Containment Wave and nearly died in the attempt. Bulma," he added with a slight smirk, "you first met Goku while searching for the Dragon Balls, and you shot him when he approached your car. Oh, and you once tried to wish for the perfect boyfriend."

Bulma's face turned bright red. "How could you possibly know about that?!" she exclaimed, while the others looked at her with raised eyebrows.

As he continued, revealing personal details and past events that only someone intimately familiar with their lives would know, the skepticism slowly transformed into stunned acceptance.

"That's... impossible," Bulma whispered. "Unless you really are from another reality."

Andrew nodded solemnly. "I am. And I'm here to help create a better path than the one I know—one with fewer sacrifices."

"What happened in your timeline?" Yamcha asked, leaning forward. "To us, I mean."

Andrew hesitated, unsure how much to reveal about their individual fates. "Different challenges, different outcomes. Some lived, some died. But with proper preparation, we can change that."

"Which brings us to why we're here," Goku interjected, saving Andrew from further uncomfortable questions. "We need to start training immediately. All of us."

"And we need the Dragon Radar," Andrew added, turning to Bulma. "If we gather the Dragon Balls now and keep them secure, the Saiyans won't be able to use them."

Bulma nodded, rising to her feet. "I think I have it here somewhere. But what good will training do if these Saiyans are as powerful as you say?"

"In my timeline, everyone here became much stronger through intensive training," Andrew explained. "Strong enough to make a difference in the battle."

As Bulma searched for the Dragon Radar, Andrew approached her carefully. "There's something else you could help with, Bulma. Something that could give us a significant advantage."

"What's that?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.

"Raditz arrived in a space pod with technology far beyond Earth's current capabilities," Andrew explained. "If we could study it, maybe you could develop training equipment that uses artificial gravity. In my timeline, gravity training was key to reaching new levels of power."

Bulma's eyes lit up at the engineering challenge. "Artificial gravity? I'd need to examine the pod, but it sounds fascinating!"

"And one more thing," Andrew added, lowering his voice slightly. "If possible, could you start conceptualizing a spaceship? One capable of traveling to distant planets?"

"A spaceship?" Bulma repeated, her scientific mind already racing with possibilities. "That's a tall order, but with alien technology to study... why do we need a spaceship?"

"Insurance," Andrew said cryptically. "In case we need options beyond Earth."

Bulma studied his face intently, her sharp intellect sensing the deliberate omission. She opened her mouth to press further, but stopped when she noticed something in Andrew's eyes—a genuine worry, a protective concern for all of them that belied his measured words. Whatever he wasn't saying, it wasn't from lack of care, but perhaps from a desire to shield them from harder truths.

"You're holding back something," she said quietly, so the others couldn't hear. "Something bad that happens in your timeline."

Andrew held her gaze for a moment before nodding almost imperceptibly. "Some possibilities are better prepared for than discussed. Trust me on this, Bulma. Your genius might save lives in ways you can't imagine yet."

Bulma considered his words, then gave a determined nod before turning to rummage through a drawer. "Well, I never could resist a good engineering challenge," she said, her tone deliberately lighter. "First things first, though." She triumphantly pulled the Dragon Radar from the drawer. "Found it! It should be working fine. I made some upgrades since the last time we used it."

Andrew accepted the device with a surge of nostalgia, remembering how central it had been to so many adventures in the series. "Thank you, Bulma. This could be crucial."

He glanced down at the modified scouter/communicator on his wrist, hesitating for a moment. The device was his last direct connection to Chronoa and the Time Nest—a piece of technology from beyond this timeline. After a moment's internal debate, he unclasped it from his wrist.

"Bulma," he said quietly, holding out the bracer. "I think you should look at this too."

Her eyes widened with interest. "What is it? Some kind of watch?"

"It's a communicator and modified scouter," Andrew explained. "Far more advanced than what Raditz was wearing. It can detect power levels without transmitting to Frieza's network, and it has other capabilities that could be useful."

Bulma accepted it reverently, already examining its construction with expert eyes. "This is... incredible. I've never seen circuitry like this."

"I know I can trust you with it," Andrew said meaningfully. "If you could reverse-engineer it, maybe create similar devices for the others..."

Bulma looked up, understanding the significance of what he was entrusting to her. "You're giving up your only link to your... origins?"

Andrew nodded solemnly. "Some connections need to be severed for new ones to form. Besides," he added with a small smile, "if anyone on Earth can improve it, it's you."

Bulma carefully tucked both the Dragon Radar and the communicator into her bag. She looked up and caught Andrew's expression—a complex mixture of loss, hope, and vulnerability that made her realize this wasn't just a piece of technology to him. It was something deeply personal, perhaps his last tangible connection to his own reality.

"I'll start working on it right away," she said, her voice softening. Her usual bravado gave way to genuine sincerity as she placed a hand briefly on his arm. "And I won't let you down. I promise."

The moment held between them—an unspoken understanding that transcended their brief acquaintance. For an instant, Bulma glimpsed the true weight this stranger carried: knowledge of their fates, responsibility for changing them, and the profound isolation of being the only one of his kind in this world.

She gave his arm a gentle squeeze before withdrawing her hand. "We'll make it work," she added quietly. "All of it."

Returning to the main group, Andrew found Goku outlining a training plan to the others. "We'll use the Lookout as our base," he was saying. "It's secluded, and Kami can provide guidance. Plus, the environment there is good for training."

"The Lookout?" Krillin looked nervous. "With Piccolo hanging around? Are you sure that's safe?"

"Piccolo is... complicated," Andrew interjected. "But in my timeline, he eventually became one of Earth's greatest defenders. We need his power for the coming battle."

"And I'll be leaving soon for special training," Goku added. "Kami's taking me to train with someone called King Kai."

"Leaving?" Chi-Chi's voice rose sharply. "You're leaving us again, Goku? After everything that's happened today?"

Goku looked apologetic. "It's only for a while, Chi-Chi. This training could make the difference against the Saiyans."

"While Goku trains with King Kai, the rest of us need to prepare here," Andrew said, trying to refocus the conversation. "Master Roshi, your experience and wisdom will be invaluable. Krillin, Yamcha—you both have incredible potential that can be realized with the right training."

The mention of their potential seemed to inspire both fighters, who exchanged determined glances.

"What about Tien and Chiaotzu?" Krillin asked. "They should be part of this too."

"Absolutely," Andrew agreed. "We need to contact them as soon as possible. The more fighters we have prepared, the better our chances."

As the discussion continued, plans forming and resolve strengthening, Andrew felt a growing sense of accomplishment. The defense of Earth was being organized months earlier than in the original timeline, with more knowledge and better preparation.

"I just realized," Roshi spoke up suddenly, "you mentioned these Saiyans are coming for the Dragon Balls. How do they even know about them?"

"Raditz's scouter," Andrew explained. "It transmitted our battle back to the other Saiyans, including our mentions of the Dragon Balls."

"That device you gave me—your communicator—it's similar to what Raditz was wearing?" Bulma asked, her scientific curiosity clearly piqued.

"Yes, but more advanced," Andrew explained. "Raditz's scouter was standard Frieza Force technology. Mine was modified by Chronoa for my mission. Both can read power levels, but Raditz's also transmitted our battle back to the other Saiyans."

"Which is how they learned about the Dragon Balls," Krillin realized.

Andrew nodded. "Exactly. Getting Raditz's scouter from the battlefield would still be useful, though. Comparing the two technologies might help Bulma develop better equipment for all of you."

Bulma's eyes lit up further. "With both your advanced communicator and original Saiyan technology to study, I could potentially create something even better! Maybe even develop countermeasures against their scouters."

Krillin looked around at the group, his expression somber. "So we have one year to prepare for an alien invasion by warriors strong enough to destroy the planet. No pressure, right?"

A tense chuckle rippled through the room, breaking some of the tension.

"We can do this," Goku said confidently. "If Andrew could change what happened today, we can change what happens in a year."

Andrew nodded, grateful for Goku's optimism but all too aware of the challenges that still lay ahead. "We should head back to the Lookout soon. Kami will be waiting to start Goku's preparation for the journey to King Kai."

As they prepared to depart, Andrew caught Gohan watching him with curious, intelligent eyes. In the original timeline, this gentle boy had been thrust into battle after his father's death, forced to find his warrior spirit through trauma and necessity. This time, perhaps, his path to becoming a defender of Earth could include less suffering and more choice.

"Will I really get to train with that green man?" Gohan asked quietly when Chi-Chi was distracted by her conversation with Bulma.

Andrew knelt down to the boy's level. "In my timeline, Piccolo helped you discover incredible strength. But this time, things might be different. Better, I hope."

Gohan nodded solemnly, a glimpse of the determined fighter he would become visible beneath the innocent exterior. "I want to help protect everyone. Like Dad does."

"I know," Andrew smiled. "And you will."

As they said their goodbyes and prepared for the flight back to the Lookout, Andrew reflected on how much had already changed in just one day. Goku lived. Earth's defenders were uniting earlier. Piccolo was showing interest in Gohan despite Goku's survival.

The timeline was branching, creating a new path with new possibilities. But also, potentially, new dangers.

The Saiyans were coming. But this time, Earth would be ready.
