My muse on film

This shoot with Katya happened in the first half of January — we met up in Tenerife to spend some time together with my fiancé and friends. A little getaway before our long-distance chapter began (we were heading to the US afterward). But of course, when you’re in a place this beautiful, with golden sunset light pouring into your room — the camera just jumps into your hands on its own.

I really tried to hold back. I mean, we were on vacation. But let’s be honest — you can’t switch off your creative instinct just like that. The only thing that could slow me down, even a little, was film. Film doesn’t let you shoot on autopilot. It forces you to move on, to switch, to choose. It doesn’t let you get stuck repeating the same frame and angle over and over. Still, I somehow managed to go all in — I shot with everything I had on me: the Mju II, the Nikon F65, and my Hasselblad 500C. I was overcompensating, repeating shots, switching cameras, terrified something wouldn’t work out. I didn’t want to screw up this light, this mood, this moment.

Light leaks on medium format? Oh yes… something definitely went wrong. Why it happened — fuck knows. At first, I was bummed. Then I decided to just pretend I meant it that way — like, very artistic, very intentional. Let’s go with that.

And most importantly — I finally got Katya into bed.

Not the way you’re thinking (though… who knows).

Katya never likes shooting in bed. It feels too obvious to her, too cliché. But this time, she gave in. Maybe because I was about to leave for the States, maybe because the day was soft and right. Either way — I consider it my personal victory. Even though we didn’t shoot that much there, not as much as I would’ve liked. But maybe that’s the point.

Sometimes just a few frames are enough to leave an aftertaste.

Also — fun discovery: sometimes I genuinely can’t tell the difference between Mju II and Nikon F65 shots. Especially in bright light like we had here. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing yet. Of course, the SLR gives you more control and confidence with your settings. But the Mju II? That little thing still manages to surprise me in the best ways.
