Socks Game unseen sketch tests +thoughts moving forward.

These are some WiP sketches for the tiny animations for Sushi and I's Ludum Dare 46  (make a game in 72 hours) project! I figured with all said and done it would be fun to share. (click here for a link to the game) 

I had to keep in mind throughout the project that I did not have infinite time, so where I would normally take extra time to refine certain aspects, I didn't allow myself that luxury and made sure to cut every possible corner I could- making the most of 2 frame animations. TURNS OUT THOUGH 2 frame wasn't cutting it, as you can see in these sketch tests. During the line phase I wound up adding frames to make it look more like a walk rather than some sort of skate.

During the dumpster scenes, I wanted to just 'get the point across'. I didn't have a secondary sketch phase so my first(and final) test was a real mess. Somehow I managed to pull some reasonable shapes from the sketch into the lines. I have drawn more dumpsters in my life than I expected to. Also, originally there was never planned to be a 'single raccoon' event. It was gonna be triple racc all the way until I found out it was randomized between 2 hearts and 1 heart damage. The single racc consisted of me just quickly editing out the other 2 raccoons.

For the final image- I just get so much joy out of that stupid 5 minute koi drawing. It was a quick shape with a quick face- no sketches or anything, and wow can I say I love that stupid koi way too much. During an early build, Socks couldnt die, and fish would go into the INFINITE inventory rather than on the ground. I left the game on and came back to an inventory full of mildly annoyed koi and filled the screen with them. That's as many as I could get in at once because the auto despawn was in and they were starting to disappear at that point.

All imperfections and lacking aside, I'm pretty proud of this small project. Sushi and I intend to pursue this in the future. Better animation, more things to do, adding audio- I won't spoil too much, but our plans for this are big. I'll be sure to show the WiPs right here along the way as well!
