Does The Demon King Come With A Paycheck? Chapter 1 Part 4

I'll be finalizing the actual chapter number and parts once the book is finished.

...

The world around me, ever since I'd drank that potion and enlisted the cat's help in learning the strange language, constantly pulsated with vibrant colors, with a soothing voice resonating within my mind, bridging the gap between the known and the unknown.

It was a language unlike any I had ever heard, as the cat's attempts at trying to figure out a way to convert it to something understandable made it sound melodic, yet eerie. My heart raced with every attempt the cat made as I began to slowly grasp its essence, like drops of rain filling up a stream.

A day had rapidly swept by me as my life turned into a whirlwind of discovery, each hour echoing with the echoes of that enchanting language. The little black cat floated nearby, its eyes glinting mischievously, as if it sensed my increasingly fervent desire to understand this new language.

One afternoon, as I sat on the warm sand, the cat gracefully drifted closer, its wings casting delicate shadows on the ground. It seemed to have something in mind, and I could feel the anticipation building within me.

Suddenly, the cat jerked its tail, and a rush of energy flowed between us. I closed my eyes, and images began to materialize in my mind- faint outlines of strange letters, each imbued with a vibrant hue. Those letters floated like wisps of air, teasing at the edge of my understanding.

With a flick of its tail, the cat focused intently, and I felt its presence push a clearer image towards me. Just like that, one letter crystallized in my mind- S. The essence of the sound filled my thoughts, and I could almost hear it being spoken.

Somewhat confused, I tilted my head at the cat. "...Like S as in the letter in my language?" I questioned.

The cat nodded to my surprise.

"...How is teaching me my own language-" I blinked in surprise as I felt another shift in my mind as I thought of said letter and took in the two strangely bold characters that filled it's place. Everything told me it was the same letter, or at least translated to it. Focusing my gaze back on the cat I found it directing a paw over towards the unknown words in the sand and to my surprise, I dimly noted the fact in place of some of the characters in them, I could now see the letter S.

Yet the moment I came to that startling realisation, I found the same letters drifting back to their previous forms.

"...Is it 'cos I just learned what it means?" I wondered out loud and found the cat nodding along to it.

'Practice makes perfect!' It muttered into my head with a strangely fervent tone and with said tone the strange letters S had represented found themselves back in my mind.

"S." I whispered, trying to form it in my mouth. The sound danced off my tongue, and I felt warm energy pulse through me. Enthusiastically, I blinked, looking at the cat beside me as a thought occurred to me. “How do you know my language?”

The cat paused mid-hover, its large eyes locking onto mine, brimming with a knowing sparkle. 'I learned your language through our connection,” it replied, its voice echoing softly in my consciousness, layered with a gentle purr. “Words carry energy, and energy transcends barriers. Your thoughts are like whispers on the wind- I can understand them better now because of our bond.'

"...Are you saying I've been talking out loud for no reason at all?"

The cat nodded at that, now somewhat amused.

"...Well, I am still gonna keep doin' it!" I snorted. "Best not to add my own voice in my own head with you up there already!" I added on with a chuckle.

The cat rolled it's eyes at me for it. 'We've got a lot more to go through!' The little furball replied.

With a determined flick of its tail, the cat pushed another letter into my mind- T. The flowing shape slipped into my thoughts like water, almost tangible, full of life. I practiced the sound, feeling the vibration ignite a connection within me. But before I could fully grasp what it meant, I hesitated. “Wait, what do these letters actually signify? I mean, what do they mean together?”

The cat hovered, its eyes narrowing in thought. 'Each letter holds its own importance, bringing a piece of the whole when combined. It becomes a symphony that changes depending on how it's used but that's not something I know too much about,'

I furrowed my brow, processing the information. “So, like a puzzle? Putting the pieces together?”

'Exactly!' the cat chirped, enthusiasm radiating like the shimmering light around us.

One thing I dimly noted was the fact once again, two strange shapes had appeared in regards to the letter T.

As the moments stretched into what felt like an eternity, I grabbed a handful of sand, tracing the letters in delicate patterns that danced beneath my fingers as the warmth of the sun basked over us.

The cat floated closer, expelling a soft trail of sparkling energy that imbued the air with anticipation, a different expression on it's face as it stared at the lines I'd made in the sand with a furrowed brow.

I couldn’t help but be captivated by the earnest expression on its little face. It seemed to be mulling over something important, and then, in a swift motion, it zipped off into the trees surrounding the sandy shore, the flutter of its wings a soft whisper against the stillness.

“Oh bother, not again.” I said, half-amused, half-curious. But it was already a blur of black and shimmering light, darting between the foliage with purposeful agility. I watched as it flitted from one patch of vibrant green to another, searching for something unseen.

I'd certainly seen this before!

I leaned back against the warm sand, feeling the gentle caress of the breeze, waiting patiently while the cat swept around the island. The sounds of rustling leaves surrounded me, punctuated by the soft hum of nature.

Only moments later, I spotted the little creature speeding back toward where I sat, its expression full of triumph. It had gotten another ensemble of assorted foliage fluttering beneath its tiny wings, glowing faintly as it approached. With a determined flick of its tail, the cat landed gracefully beside the weapon stand and began to sift through its newly collected treasures.

With a decent amount of hesitation, it moved closer towards one of the Turnips and with as much hesitation, it deftly peeled off a layer with its claws. Once it had gathered everything it needed, the cat flew over to the pot it had previously prepared, arranging the assortment of green leaves and turnip shaving in a meticulous pile.

With a flick and a soft murmur, energy surged around the little feline, swirling like a gentle gale. The ingredients began to pulse with magical light as they merged together within the pot, transforming before my eyes.

The tendrils of shimmering essence reached out, enfolding the items until they crystallized into glistening sheets of parchment and bright ink concocted from nature’s gifts, with a single feather appearing above the pot and slowly falling beside it.

I could hardly believe what I was witnessing. “Is that… ink and paper?” I gasped grabbing hold of the feather, incredulous as the pot settled with a soft glow, revealing the results of the cat’s handiwork, smooth sheets, glistening with a sheen, and a small vial filled with ink that shimmered like the ocean itself.

The cat hovered proudly, its tiny wings sparkling with satisfaction. 'Now you can just keep copying out the letter until you learn it,' it chirped, eyes gleaming with delight.

I reached out to take the shimmering sheets of parchment and the vial of ink, feeling a rush of purpose wash over me, a tangible force igniting my determination. “Thanks… but I think I’m gonna need more than a few sheets!” I chuckled, giving my head a slight shake.

The cat tilted its head at me, one oversized ear flicking in curiosity.

'Have you already forgotten the rules?'

I blinked at that thought, confusion knitting my brows together while the world around us flickered gently in the sunlight.

'If you leave them as they are overnight, the island will imprint them that way.'

"...Right?" I questioned aloud, the concept still swirling in my mind. "How does that- Oh, right." A snort escaped me as the realization struck.. "They'll just go back to this state,"

The cat nodded gravely at that, an expression of relief washing over its features as if I had narrowly escaped a trap. It was amusing to see such a small creature treat everything like it was a pot about to blow.

“...So, where do we stand on those jogging bottoms, by the way?” I ventured, half-teasing but also genuinely curious.

And just like that, the relief in the cat’s eyes was replaced by exasperation.

'At least learn what one of those word's mean first, then I'll think about it!'  The furball sighed, though a surprising amount of affection lingered in its tone, softening the admonition. Its little face scrunched up in an endearing way, half-desperate to keep our focus on the task at hand.

With a playful sense of determination flooding my veins, I grinned at the cat. “Alright, challenge accepted! Let’s dive into the meanings, and I promise, I won’t distract us too much- just a little!”

It rolled it's eyes at me for that one.

...

A few days had passed since the cat and I embarked on our journey of learning, and honestly I was a lot more engrossed in it than I thought I would be. The island had become my classroom, and each moment felt charged with potential. As I sat on the warm sand, feather poised over the soft parchment, I reflected on what I had learned.

My mind buzzed with new letters- each one a carefully crafted key unlocking the mysteries of this whimsical place. I have finally unlocked the first unknown word, the only one whose number stood above a hundred!

Strength.

I'd built up pure strength on my way to a magical world.

I wasn't sure how to feel about that yet, all things considered.

Still learning it that quickly had come with a bit of surprise- Given it was the one of the longer words, it meant I could now make out a large number of the unknown letters in the sand even if I didn't quite grasp what they meant exactly but I could certainly guess.

But honestly amidst the excitement of learning, I noticed something peculiar, one of the words that had appeared a little later down the line, which had up until now held the lowest number of the lot, had skyrocketed up to an astonishing thirty-five. The sudden leap sent a ripple of curiosity through me. I could only make out a single letter so far out of it- that been S, but I had a pretty good feeling on what it was.

Wisdom.

Well, one can hope at any rate!

Still, I was a little fearful of suffering from burn out so I elected to lower my feather and let out a sigh. “Okay, let’s take a break,” I called out, hoping the cat would understand. I leaned back, letting the grains of sand sift gently beneath me, letting the warm rays of sun wash over my face.

The little black cat paused mid-hover, looking back at me with inquisitive eyes, and I could tell it was still focused and very eager to continue our session. However, I felt a need to step back for a moment. After days of weaving through letters and meanings, I craved a shift in focus. Thankfully, the cat picked up on that too, landing gracefully atop my forehead, its tiny weight both amusing and relieving.

'...Fine.' It obliged me in mock exasperation after a staring contest with it looking directly into my gaze before jumping down beside me, my hoodie covering most of its small form, which peeked out like a curious shadow.

Electing to at least use this time productively, I turned my gaze slightly toward the cat, intrigued. “What can you tell me about the world we’re heading into? The one beyond this island?” I asked, my heart racing with anticipation.

The cat’s eyes sparkled like gems, and it seemed to contemplate my question with a knowing expression, as if the very fabric of the world lay just beneath its surface- 'That's a little broad,' the little furball deadpanned, its tone playful yet serious.

I rolled my eyes, a smile breaking through my previous seriousness, albeit in good nature. “What kinds of creatures are there? And what about... dangers? What should I be wary of?” I pressed, my voice tinged with both excitement and concern as I leaned in.

With a graceful flick of its tail, the cat began painting vivid images in the air, its wings sparkling as it conjured up scenes in my mind. 'There are wild sprites that flit through the forests, elder dragons overseeing the peaks beyond the horizon, and ancient spirits that dwell in hidden grottos.'

My eyes widened with every piece of description that oozed out, my heart racing at the thought of dragons and ancient spirits- "Really?" I questioned, excited.

The cat let out a snort at me for that one.

'No, don't be silly.'

...I will not twitch at a magical flying cat.

I will not twitch at a-

I twitched at the cat for that.

'Well, I mean there might be dragons- I've just never seen one myself.' It added on amused. 'I wasn't really much of a traveller.' It added on. 'One of the only things I can really tell you about is the simulations.'

...The what?

It must've showed on my face because the cat blinked once at that before realisation swept through it.

'Oh, right, you don't know anything about that.'

“Simulation?” I echoed, ignoring the cat's somewhat apologetic comment. Tilting my head in confusion, I asked for clarification. “What kind of simulation exactly?”

Did I get matrixed!?

I wasn't given pills to choose from! I demand a do-over!

Mentally filing away my existential crisis, I focused back on the cat at hand.

The cat’s demeanor had shifted slightly, growing quieter as it considered its words. 'A simulation is a construct, a reality designed to mimic the world. It allows for experiences and growth without the dangers of the outside realm. Here, you can learn, explore, and prepare without the risks that might come with true peril.' A beat passed. 'At least usually,' It muttered, it's gaze roving over towards the weapons stand, no doubt glaring a hole into the Turnips.

Still, that told me one very important thing- "This island's one of those simulations?" The cat nodded at that as it turned it's focus back to me. “What’s it for? I mean, it's not like there's any dangers or whatever to study here?” I asked, pondering the realm we inhabited.

'Oh I can think of two.' The cat deadpanned into my head.

I rolled my eyes at it.

It had to let go of the turnips at some point!

After another moment of silence, the cat tilted its head, its eyes reflecting an enigmatic depth. 'This island is unique- it is the highest grade of simulation that the world is capable of creating.'

"Really?" I questioned, surprised. I felt a touch of uncertainty at the cat’s change in tone. “So, we’re… in a kind of dream or illusion?” I asked, carefully testing the concept in my mind.

'Not an illusion, exactly,' the cat replied gently, its wings folding delicately as it settled beside me. 'A regular simulation is a crafted reality, one that fosters growth and understanding. Think of it as a safe harbor where you can learn about what lies beyond.' I let the silence from my end take over as I watched the cat seemingly try and come to a decision of sorts, or at least find its words. 'This one is more designed to help those who made a mistake in their past during their development, to effectively fix it-'

"Respeccing?" I questioned immediately at the concept that jumped to mind.

I didn't need to look at the words in the sand to know one of their numbers had gone up by one.

'I am not sure what that word means,' The cat muttered bemusedly into my head.

"You know? You made a mistake on your character's development so you reset it to build the right one?"

The cat's eyes widened at that slightly. '...I wasn't aware you had such a system in your homeworld- I was under the impression you came from one without magic?'

I nodded at that. "I did," I waited for a beat. "You usually see it in video games."

And honestly, I think that term confused the cat even more judging by the look on it's face. "A video game is a reality simulated in a box."

The cat just blinked at me in astonishment for that one.

'Your world... sounds really dangerous.' It deadpanned into my head.

Honestly, I could see how it came to that conclusion!

Still, mulling over it's words and their implications. “So, everything here- the magic, the words, even the experiences- are part of this simulation?”

'Yes.' The cat's paws fritted in the sand for a moment. 'But like I said, this one is very special- And is only ever really used by the very same people that you can never tell about your experience here.'

For some strange reason, the cat's haunting tone sent a chill down my spine.

As much as I might like to go back to preparing for whatever realm I was going to venture to... A nagging part of my mind told me I couldn't leave this conversation as it was.

"Who created them?" I questioned, curious. "Simulations as a whole I mean, not this island."

The cat regarded me thoughtfully, as if deciding how best to lay out the tale. 'Long ago, there was a royal- a powerful sorcerer- who faced an impending invasion. His kingdom was under threat, but he had no knowledge of how to defeat the coming enemy.'

I leaned in, captivated by the start to the story.

'The royal, desperate to protect his people, decided to use a very powerful artifact...' It's words lingered for a moment, as it's gaze quizzically swept towards what the cat had likely believed to be a myth once, before it settled back onto me.

...If that turnip could create- I shook my head of the thought. I wasn't going to have any access to them once we left and I sure as hell didn't want to go down a spiral of trying to find them.

Besides, the cat said they were too dangerous to use without thought.

'Create a solution,' the cat continued, its voice low and melodic. 'He crafted an upper-grade orb that allowed him to simulate his enemies- their tactics, their strengths, and their weaknesses. By doing so, he could observe them without actually confronting them in battle.'

I frowned at the words, a part of confused at the thought process. "Why not just use the artifact itself? If it could create that then-"

The cat let out a slight shrug. 'The artifact disappeared afterwards- Some think it was used up, which is why the royal created the orb instead... he created something to defend their kingdom's future, as opposed to merely in the present.'

That actually made a lot more sense- honestly a part of me marveled at the ingenuity behind it. “So the first simulation was made to study and understand enemy forces? That’s brilliant!”

'Yes. Through his simulations, he learned how to adapt his defenses. In time, he was able to protect his kingdom through knowledge and foresight rather than raw power,' the cat explained. 'His invention soon expanded beyond mere combat, other royals and mages took to creating simulations for learning, training, and exploration.'

"You mean the upper-grade orb?" I questioned, bemused. "...Was it just that powerful or-" The cat shook it's head, cutting off my question.

'You only need one to access the power to create a simulation, following that, your kind merely used lower-grade orbs to connect to that very power.'

A network? Those mages some how made a magical planetary network?

What kind of world was I heading into!? I wondered.

Look at that, more existential questions for the future!

I took in a calming breath as I really processed the cat's words. “So, this island,” I said, connecting the dots, “is a product of that royal’s legacy? A place to change yourself so that you can deal with any newer threat?”

The cat’s demeanor changed slightly at that question as its bright eyes seemed to darken, and its joyful expression faded. 'While the island may seem like a sanctuary for self-improvement, it was created more out of greed than anything else.'

I frowned, taken aback. “What do you mean?”

The cat's voice faded even further, and was now filled with caution. 'The simulations here, while capable of fostering growth, have been manipulated to serve those at the top. It is designed to ensure that power remains concentrated among the elite, guarding against any potential change or challenge to their authority.'

...Seriously what kind of world was I going into!? I couldn't help the thought again.

The cat let out a deflated shrug. "Those in control fear new discoveries, fear they will be swept back... This island allows them to bridge that possible future.'

I sat in silence, processing this revelation. The glow of the sun seemed to dim slightly, heavy with the weight of truth. What had initially appeared to be a beautiful haven for learning now revealed itself to have darker undertones. While I was grateful for the knowledge and magic I was acquiring, I sensed the shadow of exploitation lingering in the air.
