My translation of poem by Rumi, (poem No. 1521 “Divan-e Shams”). Bold text is poem, italics in brackets is explanation of meaning.

In the whole world, you alone I choose,

You allow me to remain sorrowful.

(Even if you let me feel anguish, in the entire World I still choose only you)

My heart is a pen in your hand –

It is up to you whether I am happy or sad

(You decide to let me be sad or happy, because with my heart you write my story).

Other than what you want (me to be) – what I will be?

Other than what you show (to me) – what I will see?

(I am what you want me to be, I see only whatever you show)

When out of me, you grow thorns and roses,

Then I smell a rose, while the thorns I pluck out.

(You give the good and the bad in me, I enjoy the good and I remove the bad)

For however you have me (to be), so I am;

For however you want me (to be), so I am.

(Any way you want me to be, I will be, I am what you wish me to be)

In the color with which you paint the heart,

That I will be; that my love and hate will be.

(Whatever color you paint me, you are the artist)

You were the first and you will be the last,

Make my end from my beginning.

(You are the Creator, my life and death are up to you)

For when you hide, I am of the unbelievers,

For when you are found, I am of my creed.

(Atheists do not see you; believers find you)

I have only whatever you gave to me,

What are you searching for in my pocket and sleeve?

(Whatever I have belongs to you; there is no need to give you anything)
