Probably worth pointing out that it seemed like you guys missed what "Scorched Earth" was referring to. Seems like you thought it was some special move. "Scorched Earth" was referring to the "Scorched Earth Tactic" in historical warfare. If I recall correctly, the Russians were known for this during WW2. As enemy forces worked their way into Russia, the Russians destroyed their own cities, burned them to the ground. The advancing enemy forces had no possible resources to scavenge to keep sustaining their advance, and combined with the climate that they weren't used to made the entire thing a very brutal experience for anyone who wanted to mess with Russia. The Androids, unable to find Gohan and Trunks, elected to simply destroy everything. Thus, "Scorched Earth".

Though, the movie version also contradicts the manga version a bit since Trunks actually learned to go Super Saiyan while Gohan was still alive in the manga.

This movie is technically loose cannon, if I remember correctly some of this was in the manga as flashbacks, but yeah Toriyama didn't make this, it was like the Bardock movie, It could have fit into the story, barring any future manga.

Gohan briefly died in the current timeline when kid buu destroyed the planet; the only ones who survived from what I remember were Goku, Vegeta, Dende, and Mr satan

Also, this actually is fully canon because Toriyama did write it, it's actually in the manga! Though the film version expands the manga version a fair amount.

Random thought: because of the Saiyan "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" ability, it's hard to know if Trunks could have beaten Freeza if not for his boneheaded final attempt to fight the Androids solo.
