i was amazed when i found out in the behind the scenes thing after this episode that the philidephia set was also in cape town and it was actually very hot when they were filming lmao. i was like damn just looking at them is making me cold and they were actually all just sweating underneath those layers! tv magic! i love how you guys are vocal about your appreciation for the dialogue. it's some of my favorite of any show i've ever watched. there's a specific speech coming up that is honestly one of the most incredible things i have ever heard and i'm PISSED this show was never nominated for any writing or acting awards.

The "Until someone has the courage to go out into the woods and drown the damned cat" speech sends shivers down my spine everytime I watch it. The writing in this show doesn't get nearly enough the credit its due.

I would argue with Pat that Billy did not create Long John Silver. Silver's legacy with the crew began in season 2 when he lost a leg protecting them. Then furthered in season 3 when he curb-stomped Dufrense. Nassau was already telling stories about that and Billy saw an opportunity to add to the narrative. But he was doing it for his own reasons, not for Silver himself. Billy saw a chance to be the puppet master, putting Silver's name and face out there while he pulled the strings in the background. That backfired on him because Silver is his own man who made his own decisions in the end. The scene with Max and Grandma Guthrie is amazing but I don't really care for the over-all implications of it. The idea is to punish something at the mercy of the world (the cat) because the father is an abusive asshole to his kind son who wants to help something in need. The villain is clearly the father but this passes the buck onto the most helpless one. In comparison to story, the pirates and slaves are the starving cat, just trying to survive. Someone like Thomas Hamilton was the kid boy who tried to help but is punished by an abusive father, England, for wanting to make things better. Colonial England is the villain, not the people it's oppressing, so I'm Team Flint here -- burn that shit down.

The conversation between Max and Madame Guthrie is one of my favorites in the whole series. Not only does Max identify the solution to the problem, but the underlying character who is finding the solution. After all, Mrs. G doesn't mention herself in her cat story at all, but the implication is that she is the one who saw the solution of drowning it, just as Max does. "Quietly wielding power" indeed. Let's not forget that the series kicks off not just because of John Silver's actions with the log to the Urca, but Max's as well. While it's easy to point to just Silver or Flint as the main characters, there is no one in the story that doesn't have a significant impact, and I think you could make arguments for quite a few of them to be the lead. Can't wait for your reactions to the rest! It's quite a ride.
