I'm glad they think the Meruem/Komugi dynamic is the best part of this arc. It was to me too, and for loads of people, and if you like that dynamic then you'll like this whole arc tenfold more than you already would have.

The mental gymnastics of the King in this episode was really surprising for me on the first watch too. So refreshing to see more complexity in his thoughts when at first you might expect him to be a 'Evil Just Because He's Evil' villain-type, but Togashi made Mereum so dimensional and interesting as the story progresses. He's a really well written antagonist. It was one of the things that brought this arc from being good to amazing, and I'm glad you guys are seeing that too!

The Bird was frightened by Meruems aura. In a way he was the one who caused the bird to attack komugi. I think it was very intentional on togashi's part. Meruem unintentionally hurt komugi during his speech. And he realized, after facing the consequences of his actions that he doesn't want to hurt her, but protect her.

You know, I never noticed this before, but now that I've seen this show like 4 times, I'm just now starting to think that that bird was maybe somehow influenced by Meruem's energy to attack Komugi, like he read the 'room' and was like "Ok. gotcha. kill the girl. I'll get right on that. you want her dead? she's dead." I always thought it was super random that some bird just decided to attack Komugi out of nowhere? But when I think about it this way it makes more sense to me lol. Sorry if I'm last to realize this or w/e but I absolutely LOVE Komugi and Meruem.

Absolutely one of my favorite things about this episode. If I can add anything is that Youpi comes across as incredibly humble and wise. Who you are ins't really a question someone else can answer for you.

Meruem is such an incredible character. His willingness to question everything around him and even himself leads him to change at an alarming rate. It's easy to see him as pure evil at the beginning when he is introduced but remember that Meruem is like 3 months old. While the chimera ants don't obviously develop at the same rate as humans, Meruem has the experience of a new born and the only things he knows about the world are the things being told to him the the royal guard (that he is king/ that he will rule) and his primal instinct as chimera ant king. His arc so far is one big nature vs nurture debate, The flow this episode is fantastic. As Meruem is dealing with the turmoil inside himself, and the guilt of maybe killing a kid for no reason he doubles down on his primal instinct that strength is strength as defense coping mechanism. However, that mask or facade doesn't last very long as soon as he sees Komugi in danger he is snapped right back to where he was. You can tell at this point how very little meruem cares about the selection or any of that stuff. He is just happy playing gungi with komugi

Oh hey just throwing this out there, you can regard Pitou as a female...thing. It's just that in Japanese, monster or thing - among other vague words - are "male" nouns. You'll see this again with a character in the next arc that keeps being referred to as He despite the obvious.

I think she told the owl chimera ant his name? I could be wrong but Meruem killed him very quickly after his birth for trying to explain something to him or questioning him, so he never got to tell him his name.

i think the king and komugi's relationship really helps see the king from a different perspective and not just as an all powerful villain and humanize the character the little, that's why i feel their dynamic is so brilliant

I’m sure everyone in the chat is gonna mention it, but I just looooove how each royal guard’s answer to Meruem’s question reflects their own personalities and how they think the king should be. Pouf is all about what “should” be and the right way for the king to be. Pitou is about doing whatever “feels” right to the king and letting him decide for himself. And Youpi is just a dedicated shoulder who openly admits he’s not smart enough to come up with an answer. Love it! Love it! Love it!!!
