I follow you, and agree- scientifically speaking, it could act like a “super fault line”; if it is destroyed, it could cause massive earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions crash etc. I don’t think “Mother” quite knew exactly what it was, either. She was operating on knowledge from her time, whenever that was (and clearly it was long before the Romans came).

The MIB would have died (and not come back) when he was thrown in that well, except for their mother who “made it so they couldn’t hurt each other”. This created a paradoxical situation; the MIB cannot die and so is now trapped on that island in non-corporeal form until Jacob is dead and there is no protector to stop him from leaving. Remember, Flocke said he’s now stuck in John Locke’s body now that Jacob is gone (so he has a “vehicle” in which to leave), but he can’t yet go until all the candidates are dead and gone.

We don’t know if stabbing MIB in the way prescribed by Dogen would have worked or not - Sayid allowed him to speak before stabbing him. Here the situation plays out exactly as Dogen described (even with the same blade).

I agree that the season would have to be adjusted a bit to accommodate this as the premiere, but I still think it's the best spot for it. The other option, is of course, actually having the previous episode, or this one itself, lead into this. The Richard sidetrack works so well because Richard's back story comes into play at that moment, so we start with his break in faith... transition to his backstory... and then back to the present island for a huge emotional hit. Here, it is so self encapsulated that it feels completely out of nowhere, and while there is an emotional hit within the story itself, it doesn't come back to the current story to hammer why that emotion matters. So again, it feels wholly detached from the rest of what is going on, despite the answers. At the end of the day though, it is still a great episode. And with hindsight, it is very easy to forgive its placement.

Obviously, every theory is head cannon. But I always assumed it was some sort of demon type possession for this world. Throw him into the "gateway to hell" where he dies. And emerges is a black smoke creature. So I think the parallel is there enough for me to be perfectly all right with no specific explanation.

The way that Jacob treats his brother's body with the utmost reverence shows that he doesn't see the Monster and his brother as the same person. Everywhere else we see Jacob interact with the Monster, Jacob always acts dismissive and arrogant.

Also, she's never on screen when the "monster" stuff happens. The vision of Claudia happens... No fake mother around. The village gets destroyed and she has no alibi... It's not like she and Jacob were working on tapestry together in the cave. I'm definitely on the side of fake mother being both the protector and monster... Or even, they were one and the same up until Claudia gave birth to the second child and the fake mother hatched her plan to split the roles between the two of them. Her saying thank you to MIB is the icing on the cake. Her plan succeeded.

I have always thought that the smoke monster and MiB are not the same thing. I believe that Smokey is like the evil, somehow and by the work of someone that is not important for our narrative, imprisionate on the Island inside the light cave, but under the Power of the protector and his people (this is How Mother could kill all those Men and Destroy their camp... By summoning It, like Ben did). It just needed an opportuniy to escape, and It founded on MiB's body. It was able to "scan" him, and take his personality, memories, desires... Just like It did with Eko's brother, Jack's dad. Why It can't change its form anymore? Because Locke was touched by Jacob, and a candidate.

If the Mother had been a smoke monster stabbing her wouldn't have killed her. Like her son, she was probably "special" too and that's why she ended up being the protector of the Island. I think back to Carrie being Juliet's favorite book or Walt being psychic, astral projecting himself all over, disrupting birds magnetic beacon sense, like in the webisode, Eloise and Desmond having similar "psychic" powers. The Mother probably just went Carrie on their Roman ass. As for the light, giving Jacob what he wanted and manifesting all the resentment of the man in black, like Linus said: "Picture a box. You know something about boxes, don't you John? What if I told you that, somewhere on this island, there is a very large box and whatever you imagined, whatever you wanted to be in it when you opened that box, there it would be..." And Jacob's power seemed to be to lengthen people's lifespans as we saw, and directing their paths. We first see him creating a tapestry, and its thread "takes a very long time" to make, which Jacob says "that's the point." Each character is a thread on that tapestry, Jacob's plan, which he directs up to a certain point, to contrast Richard's knowledge that Jacob never tells anyone what to do. Jacob manipulates by knowing what the characters would choose. It is all on the tapestry's woven passage, "may the gods grant thee all that thy heart desires."

Trying to dance around spoilers but wholeheartedly agree the MIB is a tragic character (like Locke). It is (bizarrely?) my one major gripe with the finale when MIB says ‘you’re too late’ on the cliff side as the earth quakes, it plays into the villain aspect of the character but didn’t resonate as true to his motivations. I would have preferred him to cry in anguish at the fact he never made it across the sea. Shades of Grey.

And 100% Mother is a smoke monster she’s ageless, she’s very dire in her warnings not to enter the light as she personally describes it as a fate ‘much worse’ than dying, she reminisces of her mother’s death (which is an interesting detail in and of itself with regards to island leadership), she manages to effectively teleport around the place including into the cave where MIB is working, she somehow managed to destroy the entire cave and village and leave a scene very reminiscent of the temple destruction aftermath, her dying by the exact means (and blade) prescribed by Dogen in Sundown of how to kill MIB, and finally she says ‘thank you’ to MIB when she is at last killed. Oh and a small addition - the showrunners even hint at it in the commentary. A trickier thing to consider - is the ghost of Claudia actually Claudia and does MIB have Hurley’s ability, or is Claudia the smoke monster/mother manipulating the situation? Hmmmm

RE: the light, some observations to make here it’s described as a light existing in all men and “if it goes out here, it goes out everywhere” We know from the grand finale & The Package that it’s otherwise considered a pocket of electromagnetism. In season 5’s 316 Eloise explains that the island is a single massive pocket of electromagnetism that is moving and is connected to every other pocket around the world, and this is how Dharma knew to search for it (the entire basement scene is worth a rewatch after seeing the final episode) two different schools of thought; the mythical/spiritual and the scientific of what the light is, but it’s interesting to apply the ‘if it goes out here it goes out everywhere’ idea to the events of the grand finale (particularly given what electromagnetism is responsible for in physics). Perhaps there we find the answer for why the light can never be allowed to go out.

I see that people still believe that this should have opened the final season - if any of this were revealed at the start then it would have cut the legs out from under the principle mystery and interest of the final season, the monster and Jacob. There really wasn’t anywhere more appropriate to drop this episode - it’s half of the set up for the final episode. It would have been even more jarring if dropped anywhere else. i remember back in 2010 people arguing that this storyline should have played alongside the main narrative instead of the flashsideways - that could have worked. I still find myself craving a final season without any flashes (you could still drop in the sideways with LA X and return in Desmond’s episode for wow effect) but it would have been something special and raw about having zero flashes and staying on the island - would really give the characters time to react to events and amplify their isolation and suffering (with more time to plan between production schedules, maybe this could have been done).

I don’t think the “mom” was the original protector of the island. When she was passing it to Jacob she told him he would have to do it as long as he could. And when the MIB killed her she said thank you just like Jacob said thank you to Ben when Ben stabbed him. I think she had the job a long time and was over it. And she took over from someone else who had the job a long time before her. I think they have to go about sneaky ways of passing on the mantle and getting out of it vía impending death (or at least they think they do) Up until now that is.

Just finished the season 1 finale of the Leftovers for the first time. The series is a very slow burn as far as development, but there are times in that show that are very reminiscent of Lost to me, it will give you the ugly cries for sure, but hope you guys give it a try.

THIS is the episode. I think that if this had been Breaking Bad’s Ozymandias, it would have convinced people irrespective of the subsequent episodes - just like Breaking Bad (to this day people still try to inorganically package that as a three part finale) I don’t mind Across the Sea but do acknowledge that it’s unnecessarily vague on the bigger picture and that ultimately hurt it - this was the episode to be direct with the audience (and simple touches like panning around MIB to reveal the ghost of their mother in the corner of the wheel room during the “how do you know all of this?”/“I’m special, Mother” moment would have been enough to satiate audiences - instead of relying on “I’m special” as an answer). It makes more sense as a story when viewed through the lens of being a myth, but this was not the time to take that creative route. What could have possibly replaced it? I’ve always thought that opening in black with the building sound of the island moving and then the location text of Tunisia fading in would have been incredible; then transporting to it being an island and survivors of the move being the first inhabitants - could have even tied in the Egyptian elements as ab unknown kingdom, and revealing too that the monster was trapped in the light and unintentionally loosed would have been another (another implication being that it’s adopting others’ memories to shape a personality would make a lot of sense with regards to some of the monster’s dialogue in season 6 - particularly in the grand finale where it sometimes seems confused about who it is). *spoiler for the grand finale* - imagine too if on the way to the cave we saw all of the ghosts standing along the banks watching them and then after the plug sequence they’re vanished - would have certainly added more to the big reveal later on. But that’s all fan theorising and narrative layering - as it is, Across the sea is okay (sometimes great!) but will always be hurt by what it should have been, which imo if it were Ozymandias’ level of narrative payoff then the subsequent episodes wouldn’t have mattered to audiences (though I personally LOVE the next and final two episodes) there is something to be said of skipping the episode altogether as IGN had pointed out in 2010, that in some ways it was better for this information to remain unexplained. I’ve tried the series with others both with or without the episode (they all saw it eventually) and it does function narratively without it - having it is like adding the same clarification you receive from the directors cut of a film (and whether that was ever considered necessary).

I hated this episode the first time around because we had so few episodes left with our main characters that I resented this episode. I like it okay now though :-) just like I like Kate okay now :-)

I actually love this episode, but agree with others. It's really the placement that is an issue. The previous episode didn't lead into Jacob at all, so it comes out of nowhere. I think this episode should have opened the season. Retool it a bit so that it actually ends with the Island/Flash Sideways reveal as the shock ending and it would have been a great opening that instantly engages you in Jacob's story.

So if you want to look at it from the religious standpoint, think the Creator/Magic but if you want to look at it from the scientific standpoint, just say it is some advanced electromagnetism(this episode MiB telling Jacob magnets here have properties, guy who trained desmond saying entering the code lowers the electromagnetism energy, etc). That quenched my scientific head at least since we know so little about science/electromagnetism(string theory, etc).

I have said this elsewhere, but many seem to take for granted that the man in black, or the dark haired brother is the monster. I myself actually think the monster existed before and then just took the shape of the man in black. I think the monster first took the shape of their dead biological mother to make the dark haired brother rebel against his fake mother. Jacob later kills his brother, giving the monster access to his body.

Such a very peculiar episode of this show. Glad the group liked it. At the time of airing, I remember having mixed feelings after watching it and I don't even think it was about whether or not the "answers" were satisfying, but more about the placement of the episode in the season? The punch of the bomb going off in the sub was something that I could not get over after it aired and when I realized what we were doing here I grew anxious knowing we'd have to wait *another* week for a proper follow-up. And I do think that jolt is the point the show is making, because they're essentially resetting us right at the main cast's darkest hour before the last lead-up into the finale, but I don't know if it works for me as well. I also thought it was interesting how the show tries to play with our perception of the Man in Black and Jacob here. On the one hand, it's a trademark of this show to present someone in a negative light and then follow it up later with shades of grey that make us realize how deeper they were than we were expecting (Jin, Sawyer, and Ben are all great examples of that). But with the Man in Black, even though I *do* feel for him a lot in this episode, the fact that it's coming off of an episode where he directly caused the deaths of several beloved characters gives me this little whiplash. I wonder if it would work better for me if it aired earlier in the season, since he spends so much of the first half trying to play himself as a potential ally to the main characters and this would play more into the ambiguity of that?

Not 100% sure about this, but the clothing, the name Claudia, and the Latin spoken suggests that the people who were shipwrecked were Roman or from a Roman colony. So roughly, Jacob and the MIB have been on the island for 2000 years.

The source is the lifeblood of the entire planet. It's the light that everyone goes into after they die. Special people have a connection to the source and are natural candidates to become the protector of the island. The protector of the island is supposed to enter the source and become one with the island and doing so wields the power of the island: Smoke Monster. The Smoke Monster is truly supposed to be a security system. In becoming the smoke, you are forever chained to the island because you are one with the island... the only way to be free of it is to destroy the source and the island. If the man in black achieved that, the entire planet would cease to be. The man in black is by far the most tragic character in the show. Yes, even more than Locke.

I've always believed the light at the center of and everywhere under the island (what scientists have explained as some very special electromagnetic energy) is the "blood" that makes up human souls. To it me jives with how Mother explained it. It must be protected from outsiders who may try to exploit it and unintentionally corrupt or destroy it, because it would then destroy the source of human spirits everywhere. It draws from gaia theory in some respects. So many Final Fantasy games are about this. :)

I’ve come back to this show several times over the years, and I accepted that the magic of the island was always meant to be secondary. Would I have liked more specific answers to the “magic” of the island? Sure. But they gave us enough to fill it in with our own imagination, but, to absolutely reinforce the fact that the Losties and their relationships to one another is what really matters. Also, Jack has probably become one of my favorite all time flawed heroes across all mediums of entertainment PS Watch Fringe! The first season is a little rough, but it when you hit the last quarter of it finds its stride and doesn’t let go. Like Lost, it has amazing moments with the relationships between the characters. And Walter Bishop is probably one of the best characters of all time!
