One thing you tend to learn quickly is that The Rules of War are more like suggestions. What happens is that when one side breaks the rules, then it's essentially free game for everyone. Things like pretending to surrender, being injured or dead, ordering no retreat or surrender, ordering no prisoners, mutilating the dead, etc. Although those are seen in all wars, the Pacific theatre was a major garbage fire.

2020-11-27 03:44:30 +0000 UTCIt's crazy how long these guys were fighting before any American stepped foot on European soil. Their experience was much more like the eastern front. I wish they would have shown Bataan in this show. The Battling Bastards deserve more recognition.

2020-11-26 20:46:44 +0000 UTCDuring WW2, dogs were used for detection in jungle warfare. They were used to sniff out mines and enemies holed up in caves. Maybe that's where that dog came from. I don't know if you noticed the parallels to Leckie climbing into the ship. In the first episode he was climbing down all gungho. And then in this episode, its an almost identical shot but he's battered and bruised climbing up. The japanese soldiers probably got the Commander Erwin Smith treatment with the sasageyo speech to embolden them to do the banzai charge.

2020-11-26 18:25:11 +0000 UTCSo some background info on the larger war at this point might be helpful. In my opinion the US Navy was being way too cautious and sort of left the Marines on their own. Eventually the navy replaced (or fired, not sure) the admiral in charge of the Guadalcanal campaign and replaced him with Admiral "Bull" Halsey who was more decisive and assertive. Over time the US navy was able to sink enough Japanese ships that the Japanese gave up on trying to capture the island. The US navy lost a number of ships too, like destroyers, cruisers, and even 2 aircraft carriers the USS Wasp and Hornet. With the navy finally controlling the sea around Guadalcanal the marines and army forces were able to defeat the Japanese ground forces over a series of battles. Meanwhile on the other side of the world the US army landed troops in North Africa in November 1942. I'm assuming during this episode the men of Easy company 101st Airborne are starting basic training.

To compare, the stuff that was thrown at Easy Company during the Battle of the Bulge was about 4 inches in diameter and weighed 32 pounds while the stuff the battleships were shooting were as large as 14 inches in diameter and weighed 1,485 pounds.
