I know people disliked it so they used it less, but thematically speaking, people do lose/gain accents when living somewhere else for years. I listen to Korean music and been listening to podcast with Korean-Americans/British/Australians singers/rappers promoting in Korea, and a few of the Korean-British and Korean-Australians have lost their accents and gained the American accent (so a lack accent to us) because they talk more with the Korean-Americans when using English. So it does happen.
