At the beginning, The Master quotes "Ozymandias" (by episode 8's Percy Bysshe Shelley!), and in her speech at the end, The Doctor says "I contain multitudes," a quote from "Song of Myself" by Walt Whitman. I'm a big fan of classic Who, and I'm totally fine with the lore added here. There are basically two big additions: that The Doctor played a very, very large part in Gallifrey's founding/history (something that was starting to be hinted at near the end of the classic series and amplified by the tie-in novels written while the show was off the air) and that The Doctor is basically an immigrant. It's interesting, and I'm interested to see where they'll take it.
