Here we go with another reaction request made by Nuptup!  Thank you Nuptup for having us watch this.  Never would we have thought Einstein would be so dope as a young man.  Also witnessing Germany before the rise of Hitler was insane! Some of us def plan on watching this on our own thank you again for sharing fam! - Nahid

Mark Avendano

The relationship between Einstein and the atomic bomb is a complex one. Let me try and summarize: Einstein did come up with the famous equation E=mc^2 (in 1905) and it provides sort of an equivalence between mass and energy. This equation is at the foundation of nuclear fission where radioactive mass is converted to large amounts of energy - which was the basis of the atomic bomb. Ofcourse the equation by itself does not explain HOW to build the bomb, for ex: how to carry out a controlled nuclear fission reaction. Many such challenges were to be tacckled. In 1939, Einstein was worried that Germany might build an atomic bomb soon (which was just a theoretical possibility until then) and he wrote a letter to president Roosevelt, warning him about the same. His letter was one of the factors which led Roosevelt to initiate the Manhattan project in 1941. In fact Einstein was not given security clearance to work on the project and hence he never directly participated in the project. In the end he did regret writing the letter, after US used the 2 atomic bombs. In his own words "had I known that the Germans would not succeed in developing an atomic bomb, I would have done nothing."

Thanks for watching the recommendation! Didn't expect you all would like it so much :) While this is highly dramatized, the series does a very good job of maintaining historical accuracy; all names, places and events are based on historical texts and other biographical material. The series did make a conscious choice of focusing more on Einstein's personal story than on his scientific contribution. Which totally makes sense as this series was written with the aim of reaching a wider audience. Do consider watching the entire first season, the episodes only get better from this point on. With more exposition on Einstein's personal life and the atmosphere in Germany during that time period...its all presented in vivid detail.
