Out of all my time watching this show.... all these years... I'm only just now making the connection between Sai being a dick and the fact that his mission was purposely to join Naruto's team, according to Danzo a few episodes ago. So, essentially, he is trying to disrupt their teamwork. All these years, for some reason, I only perceived it as them not getting along because Sai was weird. But then I didn't understand why he would attack Naruto and cause such friction.

I don’t think it’ll spoil anything major, but here’s kind of a breakdown of the Land of Fire and the Leaf Village -Land of Fire is headed by the Daimyo, who has pretty much full governing control of the nation. He sponsors much of the Leaf Village to secure their use as the nation’s military and has a fair amount of influence in the selection the be Hokage. -The Village Elders are basically just that, they are elders in the village that hold sway because of their experience and wisdom. I’m pretty sure they were all ninja as well, but not sure if that’s a rule. -The Hokage can be appointed by their predecessor or in the case where the predecessor cannot make that decision, in the case of Tsunade being selected after Sarutobi’s death, the decision is made with influence of the Village Elders, the Jonin Council, a representative of the Anbu, and with the approval of the Daimyo. -The Hokage is the main decision maker of the Leaf Village, they are selected for their strength and experience. The Anbu answer directly to the Hokage, and the Hokage is responsible for assigning ninjas to teams and dispensing missions to these teams. -Danzo and the Root are a splinter group of the Anbu black ops created during Sarutobi’s time as Hokage. You’ll learn more about them.
