Everyone is obviously entitled to their own opinion, but I do wanna say that I heavily disagree here. I don't quite understand where your judgment is coming from but in my view, this episode a pretty perfect blend of touching serious topics while keeping a narrative (back-)story going that is still followable by kids and teens

Harrow was a good man, but a kind of a shit king. His response of "let 50,000 of my people die as well" kind of cements that.

This will give you perspective for Viren: he wants to support his king and FRIEND in any way he can, and he excels at answering through Dark Magic (just because something is called 'dark' doesn't inherently become evil). Even when he's gone, he wants to honor him by doing what he thinks is right. It LOOKS like he's doing evil, but put yourself in his shoes: if your friend king is dead, his 10 year-old son is going to take the crown, do you feel perfectly fine with that? Or do you want to do something right now to do what you think is right?

I’m so happy the crew loved this one. My second Favorite episode that I worked on behind finale of season 2. We got to push the lighting so much with this one. On top of that, all the backstory episodes are just so rich in content. Like it makes you wish Harrow was a character through out because he is so commanding of a presence. And that fight in the square...what a great freakin scene!
