The actor Penn Badgely has said something similar on Colbert. He basically said when the show was airing, the whole buzz over social media and many fan responses indicated that many many people would still date Joe. He said it spoke a lot about our society's willingness to forgive when the culprit is an attractive straight white male.

Love ya reaction to the whole season! Handsome pat needs to come back to balance out serial killer pat 😂😂 I think the last scene in this episode perfectly brings everything full circle and lays to rest any doubt left in the viewers mind that Joe is some hero and every crime he made was a crime of passion and love. And any woman or child he comes in contact with is put in danger because he becomes fixated on creating what HE thinks is the perfect life for them. And to answer Chris question, I think there’s many lessons the show is trying to push. Ik they mainly say it’s to highlight white male privilege and how basically it’s comical he gets away with the amount of crimes he does simply because a black man could never because he wouldn’t have lost police suspicion so easily. But I think that’s a tired lesson we all should know.

I think the main theme of this series is a commentary on men and their entitlement of women. But to make things more nuanced, and not so easy, they gave us a very self involved, arguably unlikable woman, and gave us the POV of a sociopathic man being completely infatuated and wanting to be in control, but sprinkled a backstory of abuse and relationship mistreatment and made Beck and friends morally questionable, all to give empathy to the anti hero we’re supposed to find unequivocally abhorrent. There. Lol That’s my take on this fucking series.

I've obviously never been in that situation so its hard to really say if I would of killed someone if i was in beck's situation. I can look past it though cause she may have thought only about escaping and as soon as she knocked him out it all she could focus on was escape. I think the part in the apartment is a bit harder to defend for me though, like she should of ran as soon as she realized

Great article, thanks for posting! It nails it, it touched on alot of reasons I like the show. Marketa keeps asking "how can so many of you like Joe," but LIKE is the wrong word. We like the show, but most of us don't "like" Joe. I find his character very intriguing to watch, yes, but from a clinical fly on the wall perspective. It's similar (though Joe will never be this boss) to how we all couldn't take our eyes off Hannibal Lecter in SotL. I have no doubt Joe's a monster, I don't "like" him but I do enjoy watching his character. I also give major props to any show that can subvert your expectations about the whole "the hero/heroine prevails" ending that happens in so many thiller & horror movies.

You are my friend!!!!!!!! That got me off guard lmao. Shoutout to Naruto Shippuden.

I could write my thoughts about this here but I think this article sums up pretty nicely what I think "You" is all about : https://www.vox.com/culture/2018/12/27/18100495/you-netflix-lifetime-penn-badgley-joe-beck I would also add that the show also brings to the fore that whole discussion around Trauma and Explanation vs Accountability. A lot of people have experienced trauma in their life, but does that Trauma excuse all their actions? Particularly when those actions involve actively hurting other people? Moreover what kinds of trauma do we sympathize with and use as a behavioral excuses, over others, and what does that say about us, who we are as people and society's value system and how it potentially needs to change?

I don't think Beck did horror movie dumb shit at all!! In her defense: She completely hid her feelings to manipulate Joe, allowed him to kiss her, stabbed him, got out and locked him in. How was she to know the basement door was locked? Then she goes back for the key like any of us would, again, in the heat of the moment, how was she to predict Joe would have a key hidden?? The ONLY mistake she made was not tying him up or bludgeoning him more, but it's perfectly rational to knock him out then go for the door. I think everyone's too harsh on her in those final moments, she handled herself like a g, she just failed to escape.

Btw did the other Pat drop the show?

Lol You discussion is so explosive I don’t even know what to comment lol. But anyway, y’all are gonna love season 2. Trust

don’t call me lev

I waited all season to see that look on marketa’s face 😂😂😂 worth it also I love when people just “know” they’ll be super heroic in life threatening situations shit is harder than you think

Sharrod Wolf

10000000% this show really surprised us in season 2

YESS

I don't think I have it in me to kill someone even if it's self-defense. I would just try to injure the person enough to get away and have the person arrested. But then again I won't know for sure until I'm in that type of situation.

Season 2 gets even crazier. You do NOT want to stop watching it halfway through lol

Derek Willerton

S2 >>>>>>>>> S1 can't wait.

Heru Muharrar

All of Beck's monologues in this episode are just 👏👏👏👏👏👏

Sam

I hated this show all season, then they go and end it like champions. Some of the writing was bad in the early episodes, but now I want to watch season 2.

Deviant Parker

"but Beck fucked up by trying to hit him" 😂😂😂

Cap_Crunch

The discussion at the end is the best part 😂 people have different opinions on Joe and it’s so interesting. Can’t wait for season 2!

Mo
