You mentioned Final Fantasy which is pretty spot on, because Monty Oum's first big solo project was his Dead Fantasy series on Youtube. It's basically an amalgamation of fight choreography, with Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive characters, all storyboarded and animated by himself. If not react to it, you guys should definitely give it a watch, it's epic!

To be fair, the part about the Aura extending to their weapons is easily missed. I watched that fight without really linking their use of aura during the fight. But yeah, the way a couple of them just keep talking about old video games during the dialogue does get annoying.

Rewatching these episodes with you guys and seeing the sneak peek for volume 8 makes me think about how far this show has come since vol 1, animation wise and story wise :) it’s pretty amazing how much the team has progressed and improved and that they continue to improve

Similarities to Final Fantasy might be just coincidence, but the creator Monty Oum has stated that he took inspiration from video games in his animation. He actually created another "Death Battle" style mini-series before this called "Dead Fantasy" which pit characters from Final Fantasy against those from the Dead or Alive series. It's a really good showcase of his talent.
