2021-02-04 07:29:33 +0000 UTCI think a lot of people miss the point of the scene, and the importance of him choosing Emilia. Subaru's proposal to Rem was never the right choice. It was an escape. He wasn't seeing her as a legitimate love interest, even if he did have feelings for her. In that moment, he was not being honest or true, he was being a coward. He wasn't seeing Rem as a happy life, he was seeing her as an escape from what he knew he would have had to do to be with Emilia. He was running away not WITH Rem, but USING Rem. The Subaru that Rem loves is won who loves Emilia. If Rem and Subaru ended up together, Rem would be settling for being a way out. That's not to say it wasn't shitty for Subaru to then confess his love for Emilia. But I disagree with people saying that THAT was the asshole choice. For him to go through with his plan to run away, for him to leave everything behind and be with Rem. THAT would be the asshole choice. And eve if it looks bad, to admit that his love truly was for Emilia in the end, was the right choice. And was the first step toward the right direction. Before this, he always said his actions were for other, to help others, because he cared about others. But after this, there are some moments when he instead chooses to be honest. And admits that he is doing things because he wants to.

Regardless of how much Rem has done for Subaru, you can't deny that Emilia has also done a lot for him, namely saving his life a few times and consoling him when he was hiding his feelings and overworking himself at the mansion. Personally, I also think Emilia just straight up calling him on his bullshit and actually being a bit harsher with him than Rem would ever be plays a part in it. Plus, there's also some content with more interactions between the two of them that got cut and adapted in one of the OVAs.

I like them both but I understand the situation where Subaru already had his heart and mind made up before rem ever came into the picture. Also emilia technically never killed him and always had the best outlook for subaru even after all the shit that happened in the past few episodes of season 1.
