I'm fairly satisfied with the choices and the current voting. Seems like a good mix, though I wish Ghost in the Shell was a little higher. My one real complaint is that Nausicaa is not getting nearly enough love. It's up there with the top Ghibli movies (though does Ghibli have non-top-tier movies?) and is probably the one I've rewatched the most. Don't let this poll fool you, it is at least as good as almost every other option here.

While there are some great anime movies on this list (Ghost in the shell, akira, and anything made by ghibli), the sheer spectacle that is "Redline" (a 2009 film by studio madhouse) makes it a must watch. The insane visuals and music are paired with a good story and amazingly unique characters. The whole film is entirely hand drawn took 10 years to make. In my humble opinion it is a masterpiece.

Grave of the Fireflies is a rough one emotionally. My paternal grandfather survived the bombings of Kobe. It's a good one to watch to connect real people and real feelings to history, but it hurts. I hope y'all watch it for yourselves even if you don't react to it. What happens to the citizens when empires decay may be highly relevant. May is AAPI heritage month; it's not an anime but you may be interested in checking out George Takei's musical Allegience about the Nikkei internment. It's streaming on Broadway on Demand

Kizumonogatari is a prequel to its main series, so you would be fine starting with it. However, just a heads up; I love the Monogatari series, it is one of my favorite anime. It is absolutely NOT for everyone.

I really hope the series non-canon movies don't win... those should be watched along with the series ... the stand alone movies (Spirited Away, Akira, A Silent Voice) are all in a different league compared to the Naruto movie for example (and that's coming from someone who is basically subscribed here for Naruto)

Should shonen movies be on this list? Unless you watch the anime the movie is from you'll get literally nothing out of it. Heck HxH is my favourite anime, period, and I dont wanna watch Phantom Rouge. Any random HxH, Naruto or FMA fan can watch and enjoy most of these other movies because they're standalone stories, but no one except Naruto fans are gonna enjoy that Naruto movie (and even a lot of the fans in these comments say they don't like it).

If you start going down the Ghibli route, you don't have to watch them all, but I recommend watching them roughly in release order (aka, start with Nausicaa).

As a naruto fan, that movie on the list is one of lower tier naruto films. It is not cannon and definitely does not have a good story. React to the first shippuden movie, if you have to react to Naruto. The other ones on the list are much better choices. Again, this is coming from someone who lived and breathed naruro for his teenage years. That will of fire movie is not good.

I know this is a shot in the dark. But IF yall happen to watch A Silent Voice I think the original Japanese audio would do well. I get why yall watch dubbed and so on. But personally I like the Japanese version because with most emotional anime it holds alot of, well emotion. I like seeing things that are alot heavier storywise the way they were intended to be seen. But yeah this is just a small hope of mine

I don't understand why all shonen movies would be a waste of time. Like for MHA they do make them technically filler even though they align with the timeline and do have potential for being canon but the movies main purpose is to show stuff that wouldn't happen in the main series itself. Like for the first movie we got Deku and All Might fighting alongside each other. A lot of people wanted that and loved it. 2nd movie we got Deku and Bakugo both using one for all with amazing animation and great fights. Also even with demon slayer, even though I think demon slayer is super hardcore carried by the animation and studio since the story is generic and frankly standard as hell, they used an arc from the main series for the movie. Even with the new JJK movie they are making it based on previous events in the main series. I do understand everything else though. These past shonen movies were absolutely pointless and a waste of time. Sort of like how boruto is a pointless continuation of naruto since naruto is the OG and it can't live up to it :) They couldn't even make it without ruining the original characters. -----This is all just my opinion and I am sure people will get mad at me for this. Just thought I would make the argument that there are some more recently that aren't a full on waste of time.

So the obvious continuation would be "Legend of the Stone of Gelel". That's just my opinion tho, they're not canon except for "The Last" anyway.

The fullmetal alchemist movie is a continuation for the first anime that they didn't see. It has no coherent connection to brotherhood, which they did see. And its a little confusing to watch it by itself without any premise. At least in my opinion.
