7 Ways to Create Depth Using Perspective, Values, and Colors!

Hey everyone,

I've been sharing tips on how to learn perspective, but today I want to share how you can build depth using those perspective tips as well as values and colors!

What is depth?

Depth, in the visual context, is all about creating the illusion of a three-dimensional space on a flat surface, like in a photograph, painting, or on a screen. This technique is essential across various fields such as photography, painting, and film, where it enhances realism and spatial awareness. To achieve this effect, here are some simple techniques:

.

1. Linear Perspective: This technique is fundamentally about how the shapes and angles of objects change when viewed from different distances, guided by specific rules of geometry. It's not merely about reducing the size of objects to suggest they are further away; it's about accurately depicting how objects appear to converge towards a point in the distance, changing their perceived shape and angle in the process. Here's how it works:

This is the point I was making in the article about the 6 Fundamentals of Perspective Found in My Work!

.

2. Size Variation: Regardless of whether you plan to use linear perspective, size variation can also convey the illusion of depth. Smaller objects are perceived as being further away than larger ones, provided the objects are of similar actual size. In this particular example, the illusion of depth is created solely by the varying sizes of three circles.

.

3. Overlapping: When one object partially covers another, the covered object is perceived as being further away. In the example below, you can see how, even though all rectangles have different sizes and positions in space, the illusion of depth is still possible due to the overlap of one on top of the other. Rectangle 1 looks closer than Rectangle 2, and so forth.

.

4. Focus and Texture Gradient: Depth can make objects in focus appear closer, while blurred objects appear further away. Aspects like the silhouette of the shape, the textures, or details often appear finer, denser, or even disappear as they recede into the distance. In the current example, you can see how the exact same sphere looks as if it's positioned in different spaces, with the sharper sphere looking "closer" and the blurred sphere "far."

.

5. Values (Shading and Lighting): The use of light and shadow can create a three-dimensional effect on objects, suggesting depth. This is done by making values darker when closer and brighter when far. In this example, you can see the exact same sphere, but the darker one feels closer and the brighter one far.

.

6. Colors and Atmospheric Perspective: This is mostly a combination of the two previous points about focus and values, in which distant objects often appear less sharp and less saturated in color due to the scattering of light by the atmosphere, especially in landscape scenes. That's why you see mountains looking blue even though you know they are not.

.

7. Elevation: Objects placed higher in the visual field are often perceived as being further away. As you can see in this example, although elevation is applied to two very similar spheres, the depth between these two objects might not be evident; in that case, I recommend you add any of the previous points mentioned, like overlapping, shape variation, texture, and so on.

The point of "elevation" was the approach I was using about how to fix empty spaces in composition using perspective for the Hot piece process. In the image below, you will see on the left side how it was applied and on the right side how it would look if I applied all the points I've just mentioned.

.

Conclusion

Creating depth is a relatively simple task once you are aware of these points. Try out some of them and drop your experiments in the #sketch channel of our Discord community. I can't wait to see you trying.
